Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler star as Tubbs and Crockett in 'Miami Vice ’85', now filming for 2028 release

Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler have unveiled their first looks as undercover detectives Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice ’85, the upcoming reboot of the iconic 1980s television series.
Filming has begun on the crime drama, which is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on May 19, 2028.
Jordan plays Tubbs, while Butler takes on the role of Crockett, characters originally portrayed by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson in the television series. The original Miami Vice aired from 1984 to 1989 and followed two police detectives working undercover to tackle crime in Miami, Florida.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film will revisit the style and atmosphere of mid-1980s Miami. According to the project’s description, Miami Vice ’85 will explore the era’s glamour and corruption, drawing inspiration from the original series’ pilot episode and first season.
The reboot aims to revisit the television show’s cultural influence, particularly its impact on fashion and filmmaking. Kosinski previously directed Top Gun: Maverick and F1, bringing experience with large-scale cinematic productions to the project.
The cast also features Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland and Michael Irby.
Dan Gilroy wrote the screenplay, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich for the original television series. Eric Warren Singer worked on an earlier draft. Kosinski and Dylan Clark are producing the film, with Universal overseeing the project.
Jordan most recently won the best actor Oscar for Sinners. He is also set to star in and direct The Thomas Crown Affair, opposite Adria Arjona. Butler’s upcoming projects include A24’s Enemies, in which he co-stars with Jeremy Allen White.
With filming now underway, Miami Vice ’85 is bringing two prominent Hollywood stars into the roles that helped define the original crime drama. The film is expected to introduce the franchise to a new generation while revisiting its distinctive 1980s setting.
