The Rookie season 9: What happens next after Tim and Lucy’s shocking kidnapping?
The Rookie season 9 is set to return with a major two-part premiere following the shocking events of the season 8 finale.
Creator Alexi Hawley revealed the upcoming ABC police drama season will feature a supersized opening storyline during the show’s 2026 San Diego Comic-Con panel.
The announcement came as the cast, including Nathan Fillion, Melissa O’Neil and Eric Winter, reunited with fans ahead of the new season. Hawley teased that the season 9 premiere will deliver high stakes, emotional moments, comedy and romance while continuing the fallout from the previous finale.
The season 8 finale left fans stunned when Tim Bradford, played by Eric Winter, and Lucy Chen, portrayed by Melissa O’Neil, were kidnapped moments after Lucy accepted Tim’s romantic beach proposal. The dramatic cliffhanger sparked strong reactions from viewers, with many expressing frustration over the unexpected twist.
During the Comic-Con panel, O’Neil apologised to fans for the emotional ending while thanking them for staying invested in Tim and Lucy’s journey. She joked that viewers deserved some relaxation after experiencing the “rollercoaster” finale.
Hawley confirmed that The Rookie season 9 will begin immediately after the kidnapping storyline, focusing on finding Tim and Lucy and exploring how they fight to escape rather than simply waiting for rescue.
The new season has started production and will premiere in January 2027 on ABC. The upcoming spinoff The Rookie: North, starring Jay Ellis, will also debut during the same month, expanding the franchise with a new storyline.
