Matt Damon compares The Daniels’ new sci-fi film to The Breakfast Club, Inception and anime adventure

Matt Damon has shared fresh details about his upcoming collaboration with Oscar-winning filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as The Daniels, offering fans the first glimpse into the highly anticipated sci-fi project.

During an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Damon described the untitled film as an ambitious blend of genres. Recalling how the directors pitched the project, the actor said it combines the coming-of-age spirit of The Breakfast Club, the mind-bending storytelling of Inception, the visual style of anime and the satirical edge of an unaired episode of The John Oliver Show. He added that audiences who enjoyed the emotional energy and unconventional storytelling of Everything Everywhere All at Once should find plenty to appreciate in the new film.

Although the plot remains officially under wraps, reports suggest the story will feature time travel across two different eras, with events unfolding in both the 1980s and the present day. The narrative is also expected to explore themes related to climate change while incorporating superhero elements into its science-fiction premise.

The cast includes Matt Damon alongside Sandra Oh, Charles Melton and Michael Gandolfini. Rising actors Sean Kaufman and Silvia Dionicio also feature in the ensemble, while British singer PinkPantheress is set to make her feature film acting debut. Damon reportedly joined the production after Ryan Gosling exited the project because of scheduling conflicts, taking on the role of the father of one of the teenage protagonists.

Production is expected to begin in Los Angeles later this year, with the untitled The Daniels film currently scheduled for release on November 19, 2027. The project marks the directors’ first feature since the Academy Award-winning success of Everything Everywhere All at Once and is already generating significant interest among science-fiction fans.
