Could 'Ugly Betty' return? Michael Urie weighs in on a possible reunion

Actor Michael Urie is celebrating a major career moment as he returns to the stage production of Oh, Mary! while balancing his acclaimed role in Apple TV+’s Shrinking and reflecting on the legacy of Ugly Betty.

Urie is reprising his role as Mary’s Teacher in the West End production of Cole Escola’s Tony-winning comedy Oh, Mary!. The actor previously appeared in the Broadway production and said he was eager to return after becoming part of the show’s success. The play, which reimagines Mary Todd Lincoln as an ambitious cabaret performer with a chaotic personality, has become a major theatrical hit in both New York and London.

The actor revealed that returning to Oh, Mary! required careful scheduling due to his commitment to Shrinking Season 4, where he plays Brian, Jason Segel’s character’s close friend. Urie was able to take time away from filming to perform in London, calling the opportunity one of the highlights of his career.

His work on Shrinking has also earned him another Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, marking his second consecutive recognition for the Apple TV+ comedy. Urie praised his co-stars and expressed support for fellow nominee Harrison Ford.

Beyond his current projects, Urie is also celebrating 20 years of Ugly Betty, the beloved comedy-drama series where he played Marc St. James. The actor reflected on the show’s progressive storytelling, saying it was ahead of its time with its focus on diversity, feminism and LGBTQ+ representation.

While no official revival has been announced, Urie said he would love to reunite with the Ugly Betty cast, describing a possible return as something fans and actors would be excited to see.
