Mel C reveals behind-the-scenes Spice Girls drama after 1996 BRIT Awards
Mel C has revealed that a heated exchange with Victoria Beckham after the 1996 BRIT Awards nearly cost her a place in the Spice Girls, offering a candid look at the pressures behind one of pop music's most successful groups.
Speaking on The Louis Theroux Podcast, the singer, whose real name is Melanie Chisholm, recalled an incident that took place as the group was leaving the BRIT Awards. While the band members were heading to their car after the ceremony, Mel C admitted she turned to Victoria Beckham and bluntly told her to "f--- off."
Although she did not explain what sparked the exchange, Mel C said the fallout was immediate. The following day, she was confronted by fellow bandmates Mel B and Geri Halliwell, who expressed disappointment over her behaviour. Shortly afterwards, the group's manager warned her that any similar incident in the future could result in her being removed from the Spice Girls.
The warning left the singer fearing she could lose everything she had worked for. Mel C said the experience had a lasting impact on her confidence and mental wellbeing, making her overly cautious about her behaviour as the band's global fame continued to grow.
Reflecting on the incident, she explained that the fear of making another mistake led her to become increasingly controlling in other areas of her life. In previous interviews, the singer has also spoken openly about struggling with perfectionism and an eating disorder during the height of the Spice Girls' success.
Formed in 1994, the Spice Girls became one of the world's best-selling girl groups with hits including Wannabe and Spice Up Your Life. Despite occasional tensions, the group has reunited several times over the years, cementing its place as one of the defining acts of 1990s pop culture.
