Former NCT member Mark Lee comes under fire for wearing Confederate flag T-shirt, label apologises

The Confederate flag is classified as a hate symbol because of its historical links to slavery and white supremacy

Upper Room has apologised after photographs emerged showing singer Mark Lee wearing a T-shirt featuring the Confederate flag, a symbol widely associated with racism and white supremacy in the United States.

The label issued a statement on Instagram Stories on June 23, acknowledging concerns raised over the garment and accepting responsibility for the incident.

“We would like to extend our sincere apologies for the concern, discomfort, and disappointment caused by the vintage T-shirt that appeared in a recently shared photograph,” the statement said.

The company explained that the item had been chosen solely as a vintage fashion piece. However, after recognising the historical significance and sensitivity of the symbol, it attempted to ensure the flag would not appear in official content. Despite those efforts, the image was later shared externally.

The statement added that intent did not lessen the impact of the image and acknowledged that “this matter should have been handled with greater diligence and care”.

“We take full responsibility for this oversight,” Upper Room said. “Upper Room and the artist unequivocally reject and do not tolerate racism, hate, discrimination, or any form of intolerance.”

Fan reports indicate the photographs were taken during a fan event. The images were reportedly first shared by Upper Room on social media before being removed.

The Anti-Defamation League classifies the Confederate flag as a hate symbol because of its historical links to slavery, racial oppression and white supremacy.

Lee launched Upper Room earlier this month following his departure from NCT 127 and NCT DREAM in April.
