Netflix has released the first trailer for The Last House, an upcoming science fiction thriller starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura. The film is scheduled to debut on the streaming platform on August 7 and centres on a family suddenly trapped inside their own home by an unexplained external threat.
Directed by Louis Leterrier, whose previous credits include Now You See Me and the Netflix series Lupin, the film explores both physical survival and the emotional strain that develops during prolonged isolation.
The story follows Jason and Ann, played by Moura and Lee, who discover that they and their children can no longer leave their house. With no explanation for what has happened, the family attempts to adapt as days stretch into weeks and eventually years. Their children, Ruth and Graham, are portrayed by Riley Chung and Noah Alexander Sosnowski in the early years, with Emma Ho and Gabriel Barbosa playing the older versions of the siblings later in the story.
According to Netflix, resources inside the house gradually become scarce, forcing the family to depend on one another while trying to understand the mysterious force keeping them imprisoned. The newly released trailer shows rain falling outside as Jason realises escape is impossible, setting the tone for what appears to be an increasingly desperate struggle.
Lee said she was attracted to the project because she has always enjoyed survival stories with unusual twists. The actress explained that she appreciated the larger questions raised by the script and welcomed the opportunity to explore them through an entertaining genre film.
To ensure the survival elements felt realistic, the production worked with survival consultant Megan Hine. The filmmakers developed practical strategies that would allow the family to sustain themselves over an extended period using only the resources available inside the house.
Moura noted that audiences would recognise universal themes within the story because everyone understands family relationships, whether harmonious or complicated. He described the film as examining instincts for love, protection and conflict that exist across cultures.
The house itself became a major part of the production. Production designer Kevin Jenkins created a set that evolved alongside the characters, with furniture, appliances and personal belongings gradually ageing as the years passed. Moura praised the extraordinary level of detail built into the environment.
Leterrier also embraced practical filmmaking techniques. Much of the first half of the movie was shot on 35mm film, while practical effects were used whenever possible to create a grounded atmosphere inspired by classic films from the Amblin era.
Alongside Lee and Moura, The Last House features a supporting cast that includes Riley Chung, Noah Alexander Sosnowski, Emma Ho and Gabriel Barbosa.
Netflix will premiere The Last House worldwide on August 7.
