ISLAMABAD/ RAWALAKOT:

Several security personnel were seriously injured after members of a banned Joint Awami Action Committee (Jaac) allegedly opened fire and resorted to violence in Rawalakot, as tensions continue to escalate in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

According to reports, armed miscreants associated with the outlawed committee attacked security personnel deployed to maintain peace and protect lives and property. The attackers engaged in firing and subjected security officials to violent assault, leaving multiple personnel critically injured.

Officials said despite claims of peaceful intent, the group has continued to engage in violent activities. The same elements have previously been involved in damaging public property and attacks that resulted in the martyrdom and injury of several security personnel.

Experts observed that the group's actions indicate a shift from a rights-based movement to an agenda driven by provocation and unrest.

Meanwhile, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah addressed the media in Islamabad, clarifying that any changes in refugee seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly can only be made by the assembly itself.

He stated that with elections approaching in AJK, the elected representatives have the authority to decide on such matters. "There can be no administrative decision to increase or decrease refugee seats," he said, adding that the AJK Supreme Court has already given its opinion on the issue.

Sanaullah said discussions with provincial leadership, including K-P CM Sohail Afridi, focused on provincial issues rather than political matters such as meetings with the PTI founder. He said constitutional procedures must be followed in all matters related to governance and representation, particularly in sensitive regions like AJK.

The situation in AJK remains tense, with authorities reiterating their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of citizens.

Jaac announced a protest on June 9 against the AJK government's alleged violation of an agreement regarding the annulment of refugees' seats in the AJK legislature. The government on June 5 declared Jaac a proscribed organisation.
