As House of the Dragon prepares to return for its third season, HBO’s fantasy epic is set to plunge fully into the devastating Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. With nearly two years having passed since Season 2, many viewers may need a refresher before the battle for the Iron Throne resumes. Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on June 21, 2026, and is expected to be the most action-packed chapter of the series yet.

The conflict centres on two rival factions of House Targaryen. Team Black backs Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen’s claim to the Iron Throne, while Team Green supports her half-brother King Aegon II Targaryen. What began as a succession dispute has now escalated into an all-out civil war that threatens to tear Westeros apart.

Season 2 ended with both sides preparing for a major escalation. Rhaenyra had secured new dragonriders to strengthen her cause, while Aemond Targaryen emerged as one of the Greens’ most dangerous assets after taking control of the massive dragon Vhagar. Meanwhile, Alicent Hightower found herself increasingly conflicted about the war and its consequences.

One of the biggest developments heading into Season 3 is the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, a major naval and dragon battle from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. The clash has been heavily teased in promotional material and is expected to have enormous consequences for both factions.

The new season will also continue the stories of key characters including Rhaenyra, Daemon Targaryen, Alicent Hightower, Aegon II, Aemond Targaryen and Corlys Velaryon. New additions to the cast include characters such as Ormund Hightower and Roderick Dustin, who will play important roles as the war expands across Westeros.

Trailers for Season 3 have promised larger-scale battles, more dragon warfare and mounting casualties as the Dance of the Dragons reaches its bloodiest phase. HBO has already renewed the series for a fourth and final season, making Season 3 the penultimate chapter in the story.

According to showrunner Ryan Condal, the new season will be significantly larger in scope than its predecessors, with the conflict moving beyond political manoeuvring and into full-scale war. Fans can expect shifting alliances, devastating betrayals and some of the most important events from Fire & Blood finally making their way to the screen.

With dragons, armies and rival claimants all converging on the Iron Throne, Season 3 looks set to deliver the most explosive chapter of House of the Dragon yet.
