House of the Dragon season 3 is preparing to raise the stakes, with stars Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith promising viewers a much more intense chapter when the HBO fantasy drama returns later this month.

The cast gathered in London for the world premiere of the third season, with several actors teasing what audiences can expect from the long awaited continuation of the Targaryen civil war. After two seasons of political manoeuvring and rising tensions, the conflict known as the Dance of the Dragons is finally reaching a new level.

Emma D’Arcy, who plays Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, explained that the character enters the new season with renewed momentum. According to the actor, Rhaenyra has spent years being restrained by circumstance, but season three places her on the verge of actively pursuing her destiny.

Matt Smith, who portrays Daemon Targaryen, described the new season as a "big bloodbath" and suggested that the series is at its strongest when it embraces the brutal consequences of the war between the rival factions.

The actor also addressed the divided reaction some viewers had regarding the slower pace of previous seasons. Smith stressed that the series ultimately belongs to the fans and expressed hope that the new episodes deliver on expectations.

D’Arcy echoed those comments and revealed that everyone involved recognised a greater ambition in the scripts. The actor said the increased scale applies not only to the action sequences but also to the emotional and narrative drama that has been building since the show’s debut.

Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays King Aegon II, teased further development for his character, explaining that Aegon faces difficult choices that will shape the man he eventually becomes.

Steve Toussaint, who returns as Corlys Velaryon, hinted that readers of George RR Martin’s source material may recognise major events that are approaching. The actor explained that despite the epic scope of the conflict, the characters themselves remain focused on survival and victory.

Harry Collett also revealed that Prince Jacaerys is driven by loyalty to his mother and by his own desire to protect his position within House Targaryen.

Season three marks the first new instalment of House of the Dragon in two years. The series remains one of HBO’s biggest successes following the legacy established by Game of Thrones.

New cast members joining the saga include James Norton, Dan Fogler, Tom Cullen and Tommy Flanagan. The new season premieres on June 21 and continues the story that is expected to conclude with a planned fourth season.
