‘Romy and Michele’ sequel officially begins production at Hulu

'Romy and Michele' sequel starring Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow has officially started production for Hulu release

Production has officially begun on the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, with original stars Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow reprising their iconic roles for a new chapter of the beloved comedy.

The original 1997 film followed Romy and Michele, two unconventional friends who reinvent themselves with fabricated career success in order to impress former classmates at their high school reunion. Over the years, the film has maintained a strong cult following, with fans consistently calling for a continuation of the story.

The sequel is being directed by Tim Federle, with Robin Schiff—who created the original characters and wrote the 1997 screenplay—returning to pen the new installment. The project is now officially in production under 20th Century Studios.

The upcoming film will stream exclusively as a Hulu Original, with availability on Disney+ internationally for bundle subscribers, continuing the studio’s strategy of expanding franchise titles across streaming platforms.

Several supporting cast members from the original film are also set to return, including Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim, and Julia Campbell, all reprising their roles. The sequel will also introduce new characters played by Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham, though their roles are being kept under wraps.

The production team includes returning producer Laurence Mark and executive producer Barry Kemp, alongside Sorvino, Kudrow, and Schiff as executive producers. The creative crew also features returning costume designer Mona May, contributing to the film’s nostalgic visual style.

With production now underway, the Romy and Michele sequel marks the official return of one of the most iconic comedy duos of the late 1990s, setting the stage for a highly anticipated streaming release on Hulu.
