Tyga defends AI-assisted album '$TARFACE' amid scathing Pitchfork review and Doja Cat diss

The rapper responded to criticism of his new AI album, explaining how he used the technology

Tyga has responded after Doja Cat criticised his use of artificial intelligence on his latest album, $TARFACE.

During a social media livestream on Wednesday, August 12, Doja Cat criticised Tyga’s decision to incorporate AI into the project.

“Nobody asked me anything about Tyga, but I felt like saying this,” she said. “Tyga is a penis for making an AI album.”

Tyga addressed the comments during an appearance on TMZ Live, saying he still has affection for the rapper despite disagreeing with her criticism.

“Listen, I love Doja, but she made a demonic album,” he said of her recent work. “But I still love her.”

The two artists have previously worked together on the 2019 remix of “Juicy” and “Freaky Deaky” in 2022.

The album also received a rare zero-star score in a Pitchfork review by Drew Millard, who delivered a strongly negative assessment of the project. The review marks the lowest possible rating from the music publication.

Millard described $TARFACE as a “piece of sh*t” that “places the listener in their own personal [David] Cronenberg film.” He also characterised the album as “smug and complacent”.

Responding to the review, Tyga said, "I don't really know what Pitchfork is, all I know is the devil uses a pitchfork".

Tyga has previously explained that AI was used to create 1980s-inspired synths and guitars for $TARFACE, which represents a departure from his established musical style.

He described the technology as a creative tool.

“It’s supposed to give you an experience and a feeling. But we definitely used AI as a [tool],” he told VIBE. “And I know people are going to be mad about me saying this, but it’s where technology is going. It’s no different than when AutoTune came out. Some people were opposed to it, but real artists took it and used it.”

During his TMZ Live appearance, Tyga said AI was limited to production, while he wrote the lyrics and performed the vocals himself.

Discussing the project with People in July, Tyga said, “I just feel like there’s no rules anymore,” adding that $TARFACE is “a completely separate artist” with its own aesthetic.
