Govt cites PMDC rules allowing specialists to serve until 65 as Nighat's reappointment draws criticism

Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) Professor Dr Nighat Shah, daughter of former Sindh chief minister Qaim Ali Shah, has been reappointed for another three years just a day before her scheduled retirement, triggering criticism on social media and renewed allegations of favouritism.

The decision has drawn strong reactions from various sections of the public, with critics questioning the timing of the appointment and arguing that extending the professor's service could amount to depriving others of an opportunity.

Sindh Minister for Universities and Boards Muhammad Ismail Rahoo, however, defended the decision, saying universities and relevant institutions were permitted under Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) rules to retain experts up to the age of 65 where their specialised skills and experience were required.

Rahoo said a summary seeking continuation of Dr Nighat Shah's services had been received and subsequently placed before the CM and the cabinet. The cabinet, he said, approved her appointment in accordance with the law and applicable rules. According to the decision, Dr Nighat Shah has been appointed as a professor at the university for three years on a contractual basis, with the appointment taking effect just one day before her retirement.

Dr Nighat Shah had initially joined JSMU as an associate professor and was promoted within a relatively short period. The latest decision allows her to continue at the university as a professor.
