Michael Gledhill has been identified by police as the suspect in the fatal stabbing of veteran actor James Handy, with authorities alleging that he turned himself in shortly after the incident and admitted responsibility.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Gledhill, 44, lived in Tarzana with his mother, who was the girlfriend of Handy, the 81-year-old actor known for appearances in Top Gun: Maverick, Jumanji, Logan and numerous television series.

Police said officers responded to a home on the 19200 block of Erwin Street at around 9:30am on June 3 after receiving a 911 call.

According to LAPD statements and dispatch audio reported by PEOPLE, the caller allegedly said, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

When officers arrived, they found Handy unconscious in the front yard of the residence suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was transported to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators say one of the most unusual aspects of the case is the manner in which Gledhill allegedly surrendered.

According to police, after the stabbing he flagged down responding officers and told them he was the person they were looking for. Authorities subsequently arrested him and booked him into Van Nuys Jail on one count of murder.

Police have set bail at $2 million. As of the latest reports, it remained unclear whether formal charges had been filed.

Despite growing public interest in the case, little information about Gledhill's background has been made public.

Law enforcement agencies and media reports have not identified an occupation, prior criminal record or mental health history. No attorney representing Gledhill had been publicly identified at the time of reporting either.

Investigators have also not disclosed a motive. Police said it is currently unclear what led to the attack and described the incident as isolated, adding that there appears to be no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation remains active at the time of writing, as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Handy's death and Gledhill's involvement.
