Tom Holland has revealed that he personally asked Sony Pictures to delay production on Spider Man: Brand New Day so he could take a role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey, describing the decision as one of the most challenging professional conversations of his career.

Speaking to GQ, Holland explained that both films were originally scheduled to begin production at the same time. After being offered the role of Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, in Nolan’s highly anticipated adaptation, the actor realised he would need to approach Sony and discuss moving the start date of one of the studio’s biggest projects.

According to Holland, he immediately understood the complications involved. The actor said he informed Nolan that he wanted to be part of The Odyssey but would first need to have what he described as an uncomfortable discussion with Sony executives.

The conversation ultimately led to Sony agreeing to delay Spider Man: Brand New Day. Holland suggested that Nolan’s reputation as a filmmaker played a significant role in helping secure the change. He noted that studios have confidence in Nolan’s productions because they are known for staying on schedule and avoiding lengthy delays.

As it turned out, the decision benefited both projects. Holland revealed that the postponement allowed additional time for development on the new Spider Man film and helped create the circumstances that brought director Destin Daniel Cretton onto the project.

The actor believes the extra development period improved the film considerably. Holland said that without the delay, the production would not have had the same opportunity to refine the script and collaborate extensively with Cretton. He expressed confidence that the team has now created what he considers the strongest version of a Spider Man film to date.

The experience of working with Nolan also appears to have influenced Holland’s own approach to filmmaking. During the interview, he praised the meticulous preparation involved in The Odyssey and said it encouraged him to push for a similar level of planning on the Marvel production.

Holland explained that he wanted everyone involved in Spider Man: Brand New Day to have a clear understanding of why the story was being told rather than relying solely on the popularity of the franchise. He credited Cretton and the producing team for embracing that philosophy during development.

The scheduling adjustment means audiences will see Holland leading two of the biggest films of the summer. The Odyssey is currently set for release on July 17, while Spider Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to arrive on July 31.

Reflecting on both projects, Holland described the period as the beginning of a new chapter in his life and career. Alongside major professional opportunities, the actor said he now feels he has a clearer understanding of where he wants to be in Hollywood, with both films representing important steps in that journey.
