Anne Hathaway has spoken candidly about a little known health struggle that affected her vision for years, revealing that she was legally blind in one eye for around a decade before undergoing corrective surgery in her early 40s.

The actor explained that she developed an early onset cataract in her left eye when she was around 30. A cataract is a condition where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, reducing clarity of vision and making everyday tasks such as reading or recognising faces more difficult.

Hathaway said the condition gradually worsened over time, leaving her effectively without clear sight in that eye. She described it as a period in which she adapted without fully realising how much strain it was placing on her overall wellbeing. The actor noted that she experienced significant pressure and stress during those years, which she later came to understand was linked to the ongoing vision impairment.

By the time she reached 40, Hathaway decided to undergo surgery to remove the cataract and restore her sight. She said the change was immediate and striking, allowing her to perceive a fuller range of visual detail than she had experienced for years. The improvement also made her more aware of how much her body and mind had been affected by the condition.

Hathaway reflected on the experience with gratitude, highlighting how modern medical procedures have made treatment possible for conditions that would have been far more limiting in earlier generations. She described a renewed appreciation for everyday vision, noting the sense of normality and clarity that returned after the operation.

She also said the experience shifted her perspective on health more broadly, particularly the importance of noticing gradual changes that can go unrecognised while adapting to them. The actor suggested that she now feels more connected to the simple act of seeing clearly, describing it as something she does not take for granted.

Hathaway’s comments form part of a wider set of recent interviews in which she has spoken more openly about personal health and public speculation, while continuing to focus on her work in film and upcoming projects.
