'The Mandalorian and Grogu': Everything you need to know before the new Star Wars movie
'The Mandalorian and Grogu' is scheduled to release in theatres on May 22, 2026

The upcoming film The Mandalorian and Grogu marks the first theatrical Star Wars release in several years, continuing the story of Din Djarin and Grogu following the events of The Mandalorian Season 3.
The movie picks up after the conclusion of the Disney series, where Din Djarin and Grogu have settled into a new status quo within the New Republic era. At the end of Season 3, Mandalore has been reclaimed under Bo-Katan Kryze’s leadership, Moff Gideon appears to be defeated, and Din has officially taken Grogu as his apprentice while the pair begin working missions for the New Republic.
The new film, directed by Jon Favreau, continues that storyline as the duo are recruited for a new mission involving the New Republic. They are tasked with tracking down Rotta the Hutt in exchange for crucial information tied to remaining Imperial threats in the galaxy.
The film stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, with Grogu returning as his Force-sensitive companion. The story is set within the post-Empire “New Republic” timeline, following the events of Return of the Jedi and the fall of the Galactic Empire, a period that has been central to The Mandalorian universe since its debut.
A key element audiences should know going in is the evolution of the central relationship between Din and Grogu. After initially being a bounty target in Season 1, Grogu became Din’s ward, later training briefly with Luke Skywalker before ultimately returning to Din in Season 3. Their bond now functions as a surrogate father-son dynamic as they operate together in Mandalorian and New Republic missions.
The film is also positioned as a continuation of the broader Star Wars Disney+ interconnected storyline, expanding threads introduced in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka, with Lucasfilm building toward a larger cinematic direction for the franchise.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled to release in theatres on May 22, 2026.
