Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film The Odyssey is facing backlash from some conservative commentators after online rumors suggested that Elliot Page could be playing the Greek warrior Achilles.

The speculation began after Page appeared briefly in the film’s trailer, leading fans to theorise that the Oscar-nominated actor may portray Achilles during Odysseus’ journey to the Underworld. However, Universal Pictures has not officially confirmed Page’s role, and the rumor remains unverified.

The unconfirmed casting theory sparked criticism from several right-wing figures. According to recent reports, some MAGA-aligned commentators and social media users argued that casting Page, who is transgender, as one of Greek mythology’s most iconic male warriors would be historically or culturally inappropriate.

Page has not commented on the specific rumor, and Christopher Nolan has kept most supporting roles under wraps. Some fan sites and entertainment outlets have suggested that Page may instead be playing Elpenor, one of Odysseus’ crew members who also appears in the Underworld sequence.

The controversy comes amid broader criticism of the film’s casting, including backlash over Lupita Nyong'o’s confirmed role as Helen of Troy. Tech billionaire Elon Musk has publicly criticised both Nyong’o’s casting and the rumors surrounding Page’s role.

Despite the online debate, excitement for The Odyssey remains strong. The film, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, is scheduled to be released on July 17, 2026, and early IMAX ticket sales have reportedly been robust.
