John Travolta receives honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes and says ‘this is beyond the Oscar’
John Travolta surprised with honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes, emotionally calling recognition 'beyond the Oscar'

John Travolta was moved to tears after being presented with an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, calling the recognition “beyond the Oscar” during an unexpected on-stage tribute ahead of his latest film premiere.
The actor received the honour just before the world premiere of his directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, with festival organisers surprising him during the event.
“Surprise complètement!” Travolta said in French as the audience applauded. “I can’t believe this. This is the last thing I expected.”
He added, “This is beyond the Oscar,” as he struggled to hold back emotion during the ceremony. Travolta also addressed Cannes director Thierry Frémaux directly, saying, “You said this would be a special night, but I didn’t know it would mean this.” Frémaux responded, “We knew!”
Travolta later reflected on the moment, saying, “This is a humbling moment, so thank you Thierry, from the bottom of my heart.”
He added that when his film was accepted into Cannes, he “had no expectation” it would lead to further recognition, describing the experience as deeply emotional.
Travolta is in Cannes to present Propeller One-Way Night Coach, an Apple-backed film based on his 1997 children’s book.
The autobiographical project follows a young aviation enthusiast and his mother on a cross-country journey to Hollywood. The film also features Travolta’s daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta.
Cannes had previously announced honorary Palme d’Or recipients for the 2026 festival, including Peter Jackson and Barbra Streisand, though the festival has a tradition of adding surprise honours.
Propeller One-Way Night Coach is scheduled to begin streaming on Apple TV on May 29.
