Kelly Reilly confirms Beth Dutton continues smoking in 'Dutton Ranch', saying habit is part of character’s identity

Beth Dutton’s smoking habit remains unchanged in the Yellowstone spin-off Dutton Ranch, with actor Kelly Reilly confirming that the character continues to smoke and explaining why a storyline change was ultimately not pursued.

Since her introduction in Yellowstone, Beth Dutton has been consistently portrayed as a heavy smoker, a trait that has become closely associated with her character.

In an early exchange, her habit was directly referenced when Jamie remarked, “Nice to see you're still smoking,” to which Beth responded, “Well, women in this family don't live much past 40 anyway, so I might as well enjoy my time.”

Speaking about the spin-off, Reilly said, “She's smoking. I thought about maybe she might be putting the Nicotine patches on and chewing the gum, but it was too much. Maybe in her future, I don't know. It just felt like that would be too much of a change.”

Dutton Ranch, now streaming on Paramount+, continues Beth’s story alongside Rip Wheeler as the pair attempts to build a quieter life in Rio Palma, Texas.

Executive producer Christina Alexandra Voros said in an interview that the characters have shifted since Yellowstone concluded.

She explained that “there's a peace that has come to both Beth and Rip since the chapter of 'Yellowstone' has closed that allows them to become a different version of themselves,” while noting they remain “fiery, dangerous, tender, complicated.”
