Vin Diesel is defending blockbuster filmmaking after bringing the Fast & Furious franchise to the Cannes Film Festival, arguing that mainstream hits deserve the same artistic respect as more traditional prestige films.

In a personal essay published by Variety, Diesel reflected on returning to Cannes three decades after debuting his short film Multi-Facial at the festival. He said it was deeply meaningful to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Fast and the Furious at the same event where his filmmaking journey began.

Diesel used the essay to challenge the idea that commercially successful action movies are somehow less worthy of critical recognition. “Popular cinema is not a lesser form of art,” he wrote, emphasising that films which connect with global audiences can carry emotional and cultural significance just as powerfully as independent features.

The actor appeared at Cannes alongside co-stars Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster for a special midnight screening of the original film. The event also included Meadow Walker, honoUring the legacy of Paul Walker, who died in 2013.

During the celebration, Diesel reflected on the franchise’s enduring themes of loyalty and family, which helped turn Fast & Furious into one of the most successful action series in movie history.

The next and reportedly final installment in the saga, tentatively titled Fast Forever, is expected to arrive in 2028, bringing the long-running franchise to a close after more than a quarter century on screen.
