Julianne Moore says she no longer wants to star in movies 'with explosions and guns'
"When things are rough globally, I don’t want to watch it," Moore said

Julianne Moore is rethinking the kinds of films she wants to make, saying she no longer feels drawn to action-heavy movies filled with violence and destruction.
Speaking during Kering’s Women in Motion Talk at the Cannes Film Festival, the Oscar-winning actor said she has little interest in projects centered on “explosions and guns,” especially given the current state of the world.
“When things are rough globally, I don’t want to watch it,” Moore said, reflecting on the stories that resonate with her at this stage in her career. She added that she is more interested in intimate, emotionally driven films that explore human relationships rather than large-scale spectacle.
Moore, who is being honoured with the 2026 Women in Motion Award at Cannes, also discussed her long career and her commitment to choosing roles that feel meaningful. The annual award recognises artists who have advanced the role of women in cinema and society.
Over the years, Moore has starred in a wide range of acclaimed films, from Still Alice, which earned her an Academy Award, to Far from Heaven and May December. Her latest comments suggest she is increasingly focused on projects that offer emotional depth over blockbuster thrills.
Moore’s remarks come at a time when many filmmakers and actors are discussing the role of cinema during periods of global uncertainty, with some emphasising the value of personal, character-driven stories over action spectacles.
