Katy Perry faces backlash over FIFA World Cup opening performance amid allegations
FIFA’s decision to feature Katy Perry at U.S. World Cup opening ceremony has drawn criticism online

Katy Perry is facing criticism online after reports confirmed she will headline the United States opening ceremony for the upcoming FIFA World Cup despite ongoing controversy surrounding assault allegations made against the singer.
According to reports, FIFA is planning special performances ahead of the first group-stage matches involving host nations Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Perry is expected to perform on June 12 at SoFi Stadium, where the U.S. men’s national team will play Paraguay.
Other performers reportedly scheduled for the event include Future, Lisa, DJ Sanjoy and Marilina Bogado.
News of Perry’s involvement quickly triggered reactions on social media, with some users criticising FIFA’s decision while referencing allegations made against the singer in recent years.
One user questioned, “Why is someone under investigation for sexual assault performing?” while others criticised the choice of performer for the opening ceremony.
The renewed scrutiny follows allegations made by actor Josh Kloss, who claimed Perry exposed him without consent during a party in 2012.
Kloss, who appeared in Perry’s “Teenage Dream” music video, previously said he felt embarrassed by the alleged incident and first spoke publicly about it in 2019.
The singer is also facing allegations from Australian actress Ruby Rose, who accused Perry of sexual assault during an alleged incident at Melbourne nightclub Spice Market.
Police in Melbourne have confirmed an investigation into the alleged incident, while Perry has denied the accusation.
Additional accounts connected to the night in question have resurfaced online, including comments from a former nightclub manager who said he did not witness inappropriate behaviour and recalled the pair leaving on friendly terms after drinking heavily.
