The Golden Globes have officially introduced new rules surrounding artificial intelligence in film and television, clarifying that projects using AI tools will still be eligible for awards consideration, as long as human creative control remains central to the work.

According to the updated guidelines, “the use of artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI, does not automatically disqualify a work from consideration,” provided that “human creative direction, artistic judgment, and authorship remain primary throughout the production process.”

The new policy applies across both film and television categories and comes amid growing debate in Hollywood over the role of AI in entertainment production.

The Globes also clarified that performances enhanced with AI may remain eligible if the credited actor’s human performance remains the primary component. However, performances created substantially by AI, or those using a performer’s likeness or biometric data without consent, will not qualify.

The announcement arrives just days after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences adopted significantly stricter Oscar rules regarding AI. The Academy stated that acting performances must be “demonstrably performed by humans,” while screenplays must be human-authored to qualify for Oscars consideration.

Industry observers have noted that the Golden Globes’ approach leaves more room for AI-assisted productions compared to the Academy’s tighter restrictions. Some commentators described the Globes’ wording as intentionally flexible as studios and creators increasingly experiment with generative AI technologies in visual effects, voice replication, script development, and digital performances.

The updated rules are expected to play a major role in shaping future awards campaigns as Hollywood continues navigating how AI can be integrated into filmmaking without replacing human artists and performers.
