Martin Short makes first public appearance since Katherine Short’s death as family stands by him
Actor was joined by colleagues and friends at Hollywood screening as documentary explores his career journey

Martin Short made his first public appearance since the death of his daughter Katherine Short, stepping onto the red carpet in Los Angeles for the screening of his upcoming Netflix documentary Marty, Life Is Short.
The event took place on Wednesday, May 6 at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, where Short was joined by his sons Oliver Short and Henry Short. The appearance marked a deeply significant moment for the family following the loss of Katherine Short earlier this year in February, when her death by suicide was confirmed by the Los Angeles County coroner.
Short, 76, arrived in a black suit paired with a checked tie, presenting a composed and warm presence as he greeted photographers and supported the film centred on his decades spanning career in comedy and acting. His sons stood beside him throughout the evening, with Oliver wearing a navy suit and red patterned tie, while Henry opted for a blue suit jacket and white shirt.
The documentary Marty, Life Is Short, directed by Lawrence Kasdan and produced by Imagine Documentaries, explores Short’s life, career and creative legacy. It includes rare archival footage and new interviews with long time collaborators and friends. Among those featured are Steve Martin, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara and Tom Hanks, reflecting the wide circle of performers who have worked with him over the years.
The premiere also drew several well known figures from the entertainment industry, including Selena Gomez, Benny Blanco, Kate Hudson, Eugene Levy and Billy Crystal, all gathering in support of Short and the project. The atmosphere at the screening was described by attendees as emotional but celebratory, with a focus on Short’s artistic contributions and enduring influence in comedy and film.
Katherine Short, who worked as a licensed clinical social worker, was 42 at the time of her death. A family statement released shortly after her passing described her as deeply loved and remembered for the warmth she brought to those around her. Short, who shares three children with his late wife Nancy Dolman, has previously spoken about the importance of family in his life following years of personal loss.
The documentary is set for release on Netflix on May 12 and is expected to offer an intimate portrait of Short’s professional journey alongside reflections on his personal experiences.
