Chanel sends Bhavitha Mandava in jeans to Met Gala 2026, sparking online debate
The outfit contrasted sharply with the more elaborate red carpet interpretations seen throughout the evening

Bhavitha Mandava’s appearance at the 2026 Met Gala has prompted widespread discussion after the Chanel ambassador arrived in a jeans-and-top ensemble rather than traditional couture.
According to reports, the understated look quickly drew mixed reactions online, with audiences debating its place within the event’s “Fashion Is Art” theme.
Representing Chanel, the 26-year-old model wore a sheer full-sleeved top layered over a white tank, paired with classic blue jeans and white heels.
Styled with minimal jewellery and soft makeup, the outfit contrasted sharply with the more elaborate red carpet interpretations seen throughout the evening.
The concept behind the look was described as a “couture version” of the outfit Mandava wore when she was first discovered on a New York subway. That moment later led to her opening a Chanel show at the Bowery station, making the Met Gala ensemble a deliberate reflection of her personal journey.
Under the creative direction of Matthieu Blazy, the design focused on narrative rather than visual spectacle.
Mandava’s path to the global fashion stage began in Hyderabad, India, where she studied architecture before moving to New York University.
After being scouted, she went on to work with major fashion houses, including Bottega Veneta, and became Chanel’s first Indian house ambassador.
Online reactions to her Met Gala look were divided. Some criticised the choice, suggesting it did not match the scale of the event, while others argued that elevating everyday clothing aligned with the theme. Supporters viewed the simplicity as intentional, presenting the “everyday person” as a form of artistic expression.
