Sindh CM sets deadlines for Karachi BRT Red Line, Bhutto Expressway projects

Says Bhutto Expressway will open before Eid, all Red Line mixed-traffic lanes to be completed in 2 months

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Sunday directed authorities to accelerate work on several major infrastructure projects in Karachi, while setting deadlines for Shahrah-e-Bhutto and all mixed-traffic lanes along the Red Line corridor.

According to a statement issued by the Sindh Chief Minister’s House, Shah paid early morning visits to multiple key development sites, reviewing progress and instructing officials to ensure both speed and quality, warning that delays or substandard work would not be tolerated.

“Our priority is to restore smooth traffic flow and provide safe, reliable infrastructure to the people of Karachi,” Shah said. “The Red Line and Shahrah-e-Bhutto are critical corridors for the city, and there will be no unnecessary delays or compromise on quality.”

He announced that the Bhutto Expressway would be opened to traffic before Eid, describing it as a “gift” for the people of Karachi. He also ordered that all mixed-traffic lanes along the Red Line corridor be completed within two months.

Secretary Transport Asad Zamin and TransKarachi CEO Zubair Channa briefed the chief minister on compliance with directives issued during his previous visit to the Red Line corridor. They said repair, patchwork and rehabilitation of mixed-traffic lanes were under way, while widening works had also begun through adjustments to New Jersey barriers. 

Shah expressed concern over repeated waterlogging and called for a permanent solution. He instructed that construction work be carried out in multiple shifts to ensure timely completion and minimise disruption to the public.

On the Shahrah-e-Bhutto project, officials said around 93% of the 38-kilometre corridor from Jam Sadiq Interchange to the M-9 Kathore Interchange had been completed, with the remaining work expected to finish within weeks.

Shah also directed the immediate resumption of work on the Mosamiyat Flyover, assuring that funds and resources would be provided. He said the project was vital for easing traffic flow along University Road.

The chief minister also reviewed progress on the under-construction Munawar Chowrangi Underpass in Karachi, which is being developed to facilitate traffic flow from Kamran Chowrangi towards Gulistan-e-Jauhar, and directed officials to expedite work and ensure timely completion.

Separately, he inspected the Azeempura Flyover in Shah Faisal Colony and instructed that it be completed within 90 days. The flyover is intended to allow signal-free traffic movement towards Jinnah Terminal and the surrounding areas.

Briefing the chief minister on the Pehlwan Goth Road project, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the scheme includes a dual carriageway, drainage and sewerage systems, and LED street lighting.
