Blake Lively closes Justin Baldoni case then walks Met Gala carpet same night – planned coincidence?
Settlement ends legal fight as Blake Lively returns to Met Gala spotlight in Versace look after months away

Blake Lively made a striking return to the MET GALA on May 4, appearing on the red carpet just hours after news broke that her legal dispute with Justin Baldoni had been settled, bringing an abrupt end to a high profile and closely watched case.
The timing immediately drew attention online, with many questioning whether the sequence of events was coincidental or carefully orchestrated. Lively, who had not attended the prestigious fashion event in four years, arrived wearing an archival 2006 Atelier Versace gown. The multi coloured pastel dress, inspired by Venetian Rococo paintings and Baroque church art, quickly became one of the most discussed looks of the evening.
Earlier that same day, both Lively and Baldoni confirmed in a joint statement that their legal battle would not proceed to trial. The dispute originated in 2024 when Lively accused Baldoni, her co star and director on It Ends With Us, of sexual harassment and alleged that he retaliated with a coordinated digital smear campaign. Baldoni denied the allegations and responded with a defamation lawsuit, also targeting The New York Times over its reporting on the situation.
Legal developments in the months leading up to the settlement had already shifted the case significantly. A federal judge dismissed 10 of Lively’s 13 civil claims, including all harassment related allegations, leaving only claims tied to retaliation and breach of contract. Baldoni’s countersuits were also dismissed at an early stage. The settlement effectively closes the remaining disputes without further court proceedings.
In their joint statement, both parties emphasised that It Ends With Us remains a project they are proud of and highlighted its intention to raise awareness about domestic violence. They acknowledged that the legal process had been challenging and stated a shared commitment to professional environments free from misconduct. The statement also called for a more respectful tone online as the matter concludes.
Lively’s appearance at the MET GALA so soon after the announcement shifted the conversation rapidly from legal headlines to fashion and public image. Social media reactions ranged from praise for her composure and style to speculation about the optics of such a high profile return coinciding with the settlement.
