Woman killed after seeking court shelter in 'honour' case

Young mother who accused husband of attempted murder killed after returning to family home

HYDERABAD:

A young mother of two children, who had previously escaped an alleged murder attempt by her husband and sought state protection, was killed in an apparent honour-related incident on Sunday in Sukkur district.

The victim, identified as Gulaan Buharo, had earlier fled her husband's home after reporting that he had tried to kill her.

Police had subsequently arranged her stay at a shelter home in Sukkur for her protection.

However, on April 24, she returned to her parents' house after recording her statement before a court, where she formally alleged that her husband, Moula Bux Buharo, posed a serious threat to her life and that she feared being sent back to him.

In her court statement, she expressed a clear desire to remain under the care of her father, Imdad Buharo, stating she did not want to return to the shelter home. Police officials later said the father had assured her protection.

A disturbing video recorded at Jhangru police station reportedly showed visible marks of violence on her face and hands, following her earlier complaint of surviving an alleged attack by her husband.

Despite prior intervention and protective measures, her body was recovered on Sunday and shifted to Rohri taluka hospital on Monday.

Police have taken her husband into custody, while an FIR had not been registered till the time of filing this report.

The case has once again raised serious questions about the safety of women who seek protection from domestic violence and the effectiveness of enforcement mechanisms in honour-related crimes.
