Kentucky Derby 2026: Mike Smith aims to become oldest winning jockey at 59
Jockey Mike Smith is set to make history at the 2026 Kentucky Derby as he attempts to become the oldest rider to win the race at the age of 59.
The veteran, already a two-time Derby winner, will compete aboard So Happy at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
Smith’s age has drawn attention within the racing community, with colleagues reportedly referring to him as “grandpa”.
Responding to the nickname, he said, “I get it all, man,’’ but added, “At my age, I'm still doing the things I was doing when I was 30, man. It's crazy.’’
The current record for the oldest winning jockey remains with Willie Shoemaker, who was 54 when he secured victory in 1986 aboard Ferdinand.
Smith, who last won the Derby in 2018 at the age of 52 with Justify, is considered a strong contender to surpass that milestone.
He will ride So Happy, whose odds shifted from 7-1 to 5-1 ahead of the race. Trainer Mark Glatt opted for Smith’s experience over younger alternatives.
“He keeps himself in prime condition,’’ Glatt said. “And especially in a race like the Derby, how do you replace the experience that a rider like Mike Smith has?’’
The race will mark Smith’s 29th appearance in the Kentucky Derby. His previous victories include a win on a 50-1 outsider, Giacomo in 2005, followed by his triumph with Justify, which led to a Triple Crown success.
Discussing his latest mount, Smith said, “You're always excited to make it to the Derby, especially when you make it with one that's really a true contender,’’ adding that So Happy “has a big chance to win it all”.
The horse has won three of its four races, including the Santa Anita Derby, securing its place in this year’s field.
