Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have faced renewed criticism following their recent visit to Australia, with commentators questioning the financial impact and intent behind the four-day trip.
The couple visited several locations during their stay, including a children’s hospital, a veterans’ art centre and a women’s support service.
While the engagements were presented as community-focused, some media figures have challenged the balance between charitable activity and commercial opportunity.
Danica De Giorgio criticised the visit, describing it as a “circus” and suggesting it combined public appearances with brand exposure.
“It is all said and done for the grifters of Oz. So long, farewell. Meg and her spare handbag, Harry, have finally left Australia after a whirlwind circus,” she said.
She also claimed the trip included “a taxpayer-funded walk around Sydney, a woe-is-me microphone tour, a blink-and-you’ll-miss-Meg two-hour girls weekend appearance, a cash-for-wear clothing scheme, oh, and the grifters are set to pocket $10 million (£5.3 million) from their four-day visit.”
Financial estimates have also been discussed by Ted Jenkin, who suggested the couple could generate income through appearances and partnerships. “Meghan and Harry could make money from audience aggregation, premium access, brand leverage,” he said.
“All totalled, this tour could fetch $10 million or more for Meghan and Harry. Anytime these two get in the public eye, it usually follows with a flowing cash register.”
Despite the criticism, sources close to the couple said they were “very pleased” with the visit and viewed it as successful.
According to insiders, they believe the trip demonstrated positive public engagement and strengthened their future plans.
Other commentators, including Angela Mollard, suggested the visit highlighted differing priorities, while Emily Nash referenced ongoing debate around combining public roles with private ventures.
