A24 is moving forward with a television adaptation of White Smoke, an upcoming heist novel by Nick Brucker, with Benedict Cumberbatch attached to both star in and produce the project.
According to reports from Deadline, the studio secured the rights following strong interest from multiple bidders.
The series will be developed in collaboration with Cumberbatch’s production company, SunnyMarch. The actor’s involvement marks a return to television following recent high-profile screen projects, further strengthening A24’s growing slate of premium scripted content.
White Smoke is set against the backdrop of a papal conclave and follows a group of skilled con artists attempting to steal valuable treasures from the Vatican. Although the novel is not scheduled for publication until 2027, it has already generated industry buzz, with rights sold across multiple international territories.
Sources indicate that the decision to adapt the story for television rather than film was influenced by its potential as an ongoing narrative, with the book planned as part of a series. A24’s offer, alongside SunnyMarch’s involvement, ultimately secured the deal.
Nick Brucker is the pseudonym of author Nicholas Binge, whose previous work has received critical recognition and adaptation interest. The upcoming project reflects continued demand for high-concept literary adaptations within the streaming and television landscape.
Production timelines and additional casting details for White Smoke have not yet been announced. The series remains in early development as A24 expands its portfolio of ambitious, globally appealing projects.
