I Am Legend 2 has officially found its director, with Collider exclusively reporting that filmmaker Steven Caple Jr. is set to helm the long-awaited sequel to Will Smith’s 2007 post-apocalyptic hit.

The project has been in development for years, but the latest update signals major progress as Warner Bros. moves forward with the follow-up nearly two decades after the original film became a box office success.

Caple is best known for directing Creed II and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, making him a notable choice to lead the next chapter of the franchise.

Will Smith is still expected to return, despite his character Robert Neville dying in the theatrical ending of the first movie. Previous reports have stated that the sequel will instead treat the alternate ending as canon, where Neville survives after discovering the infected were not the monsters he believed them to be.

Michael B. Jordan has also been linked to the sequel, with original screenwriter Akiva Goldsman returning to pen the script.

No release date has been announced yet, but the latest update has reignited excitement among fans eager to see the franchise return.
