Maya Erskine is set to make her feature directorial debut with an untitled teen comedy backed by A24 and production company Fruit Tree, according to industry reports from Deadline. The project marks a major milestone behind the camera for the Mr. & Mrs. Smith star following her recent breakout success on television.

The upcoming film is based on a script by writer Morgan Lehmann and has been described as a high-priority project after a competitive bidding process. Producers include Emma Stone, Dave McCary, and Ali Herting under Fruit Tree, along with Ley Line Entertainment’s Tim Headington and Theresa Steele Page, who will also co-finance the film.

While plot details remain tightly under wraps, the teen comedy has already generated significant early industry interest. Reports indicate the script attracted multiple studios before A24 and Fruit Tree secured the rights following a heated auction.

Erskine’s move into feature directing follows her acclaimed work on the Hulu series PEN15, where she previously wrote and directed episodes, showcasing her distinct comedic voice and storytelling style.

She is also widely recognized for her role in Mr. & Mrs. Smith alongside Donald Glover, with both actors recently confirmed to return for the show’s upcoming second season.

Industry insiders note that despite this being her first feature film as director, Erskine’s pitch reportedly impressed executives and producers, ultimately securing her the project. The film is expected to further establish her as a rising multi-hyphenate talent in Hollywood.
