Sporadic rains
As sporadic rains and thunderstorms sweep across multiple regions of the country, the disruption they bring is becoming as predictable as the forecasts themselves. The NDMA alert for April 12 to 17, covering Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, should trigger a coordinated response to save lives and livelihoods along with critical infrastructure.
Forecasts had clearly identified vulnerable districts, from the hilly terrains of Chitral and Swat to the densely populated cities of Lahore and Rawalpindi. Such granular warnings leave little room for administrative surprise. The issue, therefore, is the absence of timely action. Concerned officials must first recognise that weather advisories are operational triggers rather than updates. Municipal authorities should ensure pre-emptive clearing of drainage systems, particularly in urban centres where even moderate rainfall can overwhelm clogged infrastructure. Power utilities must carry out rapid inspections of vulnerable transmission lines and transformers, especially in areas prone to strong winds. Local administrations should issue clear, accessible advisories to citizens, including traffic management plans and safety protocols during lightning and windstorms.
In mountainous regions, contingency planning is even more critical. Coordination between travel advisories and emergency response teams can significantly help reduce risk. Temporary disruptions in connectivity should not translate into humanitarian challenges simply because response mechanisms were not mobilised in advance. Equally important is communication. Weather alerts often remain confined to official statements, failing to reach those most at risk in a timely and understandable manner. A more proactive use of digital platforms and SMS alerts can bridge this gap, ensuring that warnings translate into action at the citizen level.
Fixing does not always require grand institutional overhauls. The systems exist and the forecasts are increasingly precise. What is needed is diligence in execution and sincerity in response.
