AI-powered Alpha School expands to Chicago with $55,000 tuition
Founded in 2014 in Austin, Texas, Alpha School has expanded to more than 20 locations across the United States

A new artificial intelligence-driven school is set to open in Chicago, with annual tuition reaching $55,000, sparking both excitement and concern about the future of education.
The institution, known as Alpha School, is a private K–8 school that replaces traditional teachers with AI-powered learning platforms and classroom “guides.” Students spend about two hours each morning learning core subjects like math, reading, and science through adaptive software, before moving on to workshops such as coding and public speaking later in the day.
Founded in 2014 in Austin, Texas, Alpha School has expanded to more than 20 locations across the United States, with the Chicago campus marking its latest addition.
The steep tuition also includes premium experiences, such as trips to events like Formula 1 races and summer programs in destinations like the Hamptons, appealing largely to families in tech and finance sectors.
Supporters of the model argue that AI-driven learning allows students to progress at a faster pace through personalized instruction. One parent described the approach as “the future,” highlighting how quickly children can advance using the system.
However, the concept has raised concerns among education experts, who question whether AI can fully replace human teachers. Critics warn that essential aspects of learning, including emotional support, critical thinking guidance, and social development, may be difficult to replicate through technology alone.
As AI continues to reshape industries, Alpha School’s expansion reflects a growing experiment in education, one that could redefine classrooms, but also faces ongoing scrutiny over its long-term impact.
