Kachehry Chowk project cost surges to Rs19 billion
Heavy rains, inflation push deadline to end of May

The cost of the state-of-the-art District Kachehry underpass, overhead bridge and pedestrian bridges project has surged from Rs16 billion to Rs19 billion due to skyrocketing prices of construction materials, including cement, sand, and steel.
Completion has also been delayed by 30 days due to Eid holidays and heavy rains over the past three weeks. The project, initially scheduled for completion on April 30, is now expected to be finished by May 3031. Preparations for inauguration have been halted.
Rawalpindi Commissioner Aamir Khattak has taken strict notice of the delay and directed authorities to ensure completion without further extension beyond May 30.
The project has also led to closure of the 200-year-old main gate of the district courts and adjoining routes used by NAB, anti-corruption, narcotics, customs, special courts, and labour courts. Judges, staff, and lawyers have protested the move.
District administration officials said reopening the gate was not within their authority, while alternative routes were deemed unsafe, prompting the matter to be taken to the High Court. Authorities cited security concerns, stating fast-moving official vehicles could face risks if access is restored.
During a visit with FWO officials, the commissioner reviewed construction progress. Engineers and contractors briefed him that work is ongoing in double shifts, with overall progress at 76 per cent.
Physical progress stands at 74 per cent at Kachehry intersection, 72 per cent at Iftikhar Janjua, and 71 per cent at Annex Chowk.
Utility ducts are 83 per cent complete, pedestrian bridges 50 per cent, tube well 96 per cent and retaining wall 98 per cent complete.
The project, launched on November 3, 2025, is progressing at a fast pace, with May 2026 set as the final completion timeline. Installation of plants and poles has reached the final stage.
