RAWALPINDI:

The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation has completed 60 per cent work on the beautification project of historic Raja Bazaar and Commercial Market, alongside underground cabling.

The deadline for completion has been set for May 30, with inauguration expected in June by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The Rs875 million project is likely to see a cost increase.

Citizens are expected to witness a transformed and impressive look of Raja Bazaar and Commercial Market by June this year. Additionally, a parking plaza project worth over Rs3.25 billion at Fawara Chowk, Old Municipal Office site, has been sent to the Punjab government for approval.

Details reveal that underground cabling from Fawara Chowk to Dingi Khoi Chowk and the commercial area has been completed, while beautification work is progressing rapidly. Attractive arches in a traditional architectural style are being constructed in front of shops using small red bricks.

Facade uplift of old buildings, repair and renovation, uniform signboards, walking areas with tuff tiles, footpaths, washrooms, seating benches, decorative lighting, and plantation of flowers and greenery have begun. The area is expected to be opened as a walking street, similar to Bank Road Saddar, by May 30.

Underground cabling and utility relocation have also been completed in Commercial Market, where beautification work is now underway at pace. Chief Officer Municipal Corporation Imran Ali said the deadline under the "Sohna Punjab Programme" has been fixed for May 30, ensuring cleanliness, aesthetics, and improved environment for citizens.

He added that the incomplete parking plaza at Fawara Chowk does not meet parking demands, and a new plaza is planned nearby at the former municipal office site.
