Jacob Tierney hints Heated Rivalry season 2 may split The Long Game storyline
Heated Rivalry season 2 may split The Long Game story; Jacob Tierney addresses racial backlash against cast

HBO Max’s Heated Rivalry will continue its buzz-worthy romance drama in Season 2. Creator Jacob Tierney revealed the season may not cover the entire plot of The Long Game, the sixth book in Rachel Reid’s Game Changers series.
Tierney hinted that some storylines involving Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rosanov (Connor Storrie) could carry over into another season, ensuring fans can expect a deeper exploration of their relationship.
Tierney, who co-wrote the new season with Michael Goldbach, emphasized the show’s commitment to balancing mature drama with the onscreen romance. “We’re continuing to take this relationship on a journey that will end happily, but along the way is full of ups and downs,” he said. The series addresses codependency, self-discovery, and the challenges of queer love in a complex world.
Season 2 also comes amid ongoing discussions of fan interactions. Tierney addressed the racial backlash and discriminatory comments directed at the diverse cast, particularly toward Williams for his half-Korean heritage. The cast collectively posted a statement condemning hate and bigotry, emphasizing the importance of support and inclusion.
Tierney also highlighted the significance of representation in the series. “We have a non-white lead. I think that’s important,” he said, acknowledging the show’s impact on queer and multicultural audiences.
With Season 2 set to premiere in April 2027, Heated Rivalry promises to continue blending heartfelt romance, real-world challenges, and thoughtful storytelling, while exploring the full arc of Shane and Ilya’s evolving love story.
