A new trailer and character posters have been released for Mother Mary, the upcoming film directed by David Lowery and produced by A24. The project has been described as a “psychosexual pop thriller” and features Anne Hathaway in the lead role.

The latest teaser coincides with the release of a new song from the film, “My Mouth is Lonely For You”, performed by Hathaway and FKA twigs.

The film centres on Hathaway’s character, a pop megastar known as Mother Mary, who experiences an existential crisis and leaves her tour.

The story follows her return to an estranged friend, Sam, played by Michaela Coel, a fashion designer who helped shape Mary’s public image. Mary asks Sam to create a new dress, though the trailer suggests unresolved tension between the two characters.

While the film is not described as supernatural, the trailer presents scenes that imply psychological and unsettling elements. The narrative may explore events from the perspective of the central character, though this is not explicitly confirmed.

Speaking about her role, Hathaway said, “What struck me right away, reading the script, is that you can’t ‘perform’ Mother Mary. If I got the part, I would have to become material that David could craft with. … I had to submit to being a beginner. The humility of that — showing up every day knowing you’re going to suck. And it has to be okay. You’re not ‘bad.’ You’re just a beginner. Getting to that mindset — I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome. But it was hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard.”

Coel also commented on Hathaway’s performance, stating, “It’s very brave work that she’s done,” and added, “That requires a lot of strength. Gallons and tons.”

The film includes original music by Jack Antonoff, Charli xcx and FKA twigs, who also appear in the cast alongside Hunter Schafer and others.
