The wizarding world is officially back and bigger than ever. HBO’s upcoming adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has already shattered records, with its first trailer pulling in a staggering 277 million organic views within just 48 hours.

The milestone makes it the most watched trailer in the history of both HBO and HBO Max, more than doubling the previous record held by the platform. The scale of the response highlights just how much anticipation surrounds the reboot, even years after the original film franchise concluded.

The new series, based on the globally successful books by J. K. Rowling, is set to premiere in Christmas 2026 and will reportedly dedicate an entire season to each book. The first instalment introduces a new generation of actors stepping into some of the most recognisable roles in pop culture.

Dominic McLaughlin leads the cast as Harry Potter, joined by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The supporting cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Hagrid and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy.

While the numbers paint a clear picture of massive interest, the reaction online has been far from universally glowing. Alongside excitement and nostalgia, parts of the audience have raised concerns about the darker tone of the trailer, with some viewers claiming it was difficult to see certain scenes clearly. Others have reignited ongoing debates around revisiting such an iconic franchise in the first place.

Despite the mixed chatter, the record breaking debut signals a strong start for HBO’s long term vision. The series is expected to run for at least a decade, marking one of the network’s most ambitious projects to date.

Behind the scenes, Francesca Gardiner serves as writer and executive producer, while Mark Mylod directs multiple episodes. The project is produced in association with Warner Bros. Television and Brontë Film and TV, with Rowling also attached as an executive producer.

The story will once again follow Harry’s journey from an ordinary childhood to discovering his place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where friendship, danger and a looming dark force await.

Whether the reboot ultimately lives up to expectations remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear. The magic still pulls audiences in, and in record breaking numbers.
