LAHORE:

Police have registered a case against seven suspects, including six serving police officials, after a man died while in custody at the Industrial Area police post of Kahna police station, raising serious concerns over custodial practices.

The First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged under sections related to murder, misuse of authority, and torture.

The case pertains to the death of a detainee identified as Iftikhar, whose body was reportedly found hanging inside the police post.

The FIR alleges that the victim was subjected to torture during detention, which ultimately led to his death.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are being treated as suspicious, prompting a formal criminal investigation.

According to the complaint, on March 26, a police official used the detainee's mobile phone to contact his wife, informing her that Iftikhar had been taken into custody on allegations of abducting a girl.

The complainant further alleged that police personnel had demanded a bribe of Rs200,000 in exchange for not proceeding with the case against the detainee.

Following the incident, authorities have taken the entire staff of the Industrial Area police post into custody.

Police officials confirmed that an investigation is currently under way and all aspects of the case are being thoroughly examined.

Officials have assured that strict legal action will be taken against those found responsible, adding that the inquiry will be conducted in a transparent manner.

The incident has sparked concern among legal and civil society circles over alleged custodial violence, with calls for accountability and reforms to ensure the protection of detainees' rights.
