ISLAMABAD:

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to conduct a feasibility study for launching an electric tram service in the federal capital as part of efforts to promote an environmentally friendly and modern public transport system.

The decision was taken at a meeting held at the CDA Headquarters, chaired by CDA Chairman and Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa. The meeting reviewed the practical implementation and infrastructure requirements for the proposed electric tram and e-bus projects in Islamabad. It was decided that the feasibility study for the electric tram project would be initiated at the earliest.

According to officials, the project will include the establishment of depots, parking areas, charging infrastructure and maintenance facilities. The tram system will be developed in line with a modern Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and integrated with Islamabad's existing transit network.

The CDA chairman directed that the project should be fully digital and cashless, and instructed that the acquisition of carbon credits for the eco-friendly initiative be ensured during the planning phase. He also said the feasibility study should focus on connecting the tram service with key locations in the city, particularly Islamabad International Airport, while taking into account current ridership data and future transport demand.

Randhawa said the initiative would not only provide modern and affordable transport facilities to citizens but also help reduce environmental pollution, adding that all resources were being utilised to improve urban mobility in the capital.
