A sequel to Project Hail Mary is not off the table, as the film’s strong box office performance pushes it into potential franchise territory.

Sources indicate that while no official sequel is currently in development, the possibility largely depends on Andy Weir, whose novel serves as the foundation for the film. Insiders say Weir is “in the driver’s seat,” meaning any continuation would likely require him to first develop a follow-up book.

The Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi film has quickly become a breakout success, drawing strong audience interest and exceeding expectations at the box office. Its performance has positioned it as a rare original property with franchise potential, something studios are increasingly eager to build on.

Despite the momentum, Weir has never written a sequel to any of his previous works, including The Martian. While he has reportedly considered ideas for a continuation of Project Hail Mary, no concrete plans have been finalized.

The film’s ending, which leans more uplifting than the novel’s tone, has also made the idea of a sequel more feasible from a storytelling perspective. This has further fueled speculation among fans eager to see more of the universe, and especially the beloved alien character Rocky.

For now, the future of the franchise remains uncertain. But with strong audience demand and growing studio interest, all signs suggest that if Weir chooses to revisit the story, a sequel could quickly follow.
