It may have been a mere misplaced dot that led to accusations of blasphemy against a Christian eighth-grader, whose miniscule error led to her expulsion from school and uproar amongst local religious leaders.
Faryal Bhatti, a student at the Sir Syed Girls High School in Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) colony Havelian, erroneously misspelt a word in an Urdu exam while answering a question on a poem written in praise of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The word in question was ‘laanat’ instead of ‘naat’ – an easy error for a child to make, as the written versions of the words are similar.
According to the school administration and religious leaders who took great exception to the hapless student’s mistake, the error is ‘serious’ enough to fall within the realm of blasphemy, Saturday.
Spelling out her punishment
On Thursday, Faryal’s Urdu teacher was collecting the answer sheets from her students when she noticed the apparently offensive word on her pupil’s sheet. The teacher, Fareeda Bibi, reportedly summoned the Christian girl, scolded her and beat her. Her punishment, however, did not end here. When Faryal’s class fellows learnt of the alleged blasphemy, the teacher brought the principal’s notice to the matter, who further informed the school management.
In the meanwhile, the news spread throughout the colony. The next day, male students of the POF colony school as well as certain religious elements took out a rally, demanding the registration of a criminal case against the eighth-grader and her expulsion from the area.
Prayer leaders within the community also condemned the incident in their Friday sermons, asking the colony’s administration to not only take action against Faryal but her entire family. In the wake of the increasing tensions, Managing Director POF Colony Havelian Asif Siddiki called a meeting of colony-based ulemas and school teachers to discuss the situation. The girl and her mother were asked to appear before the meeting, where they explained that it was a mere error, caused by a resemblance between the two words. The two immediately apologised, adding that Faryal had no malicious intentions.
In a move that was apparently meant to pacify the religious elements clamouring for action against the teenage ‘blasphemer’, the POF administration expelled her from the school on Saturday. Faryal was not the only one who got in trouble for her spelling error, however, as her mother, Sarafeen Bhatti, who was a staff nurse at the POF Hospital Havelian for several years, was immediately transferred to POF Wah Cantonment Hospital.
Decision applauded
While talking to The Express Tribune, Maulana Alla Dita Khateeb of Gol Masjid praised the decision of the POF colony administration, claiming that he had personally seen the answer sheet in question. He further went on to say that he had met the girl himself, who had apologised for the word used in error. Asked whether the incident still fell within the realm of blasphemy and whether Faryal deserved expulsion when she had misspelt the word unintentionally, Khateeb said that although he was unclear about the intentions of the girl, the word she had used was sacrilegious.
The managing director of POF Colony was not available for comment.

@MSQ: It is not useless because the world is watching, learning, and people are coming together against corrupt governments (yes, my own included). I offer my strength to this poor girl and to all who suffer worldwide. May we develop intelligence through education and know peace. <3
In Pakistan the blind lead the blind. Any uneducated man can decide he is a true man of god and his word may stand to hold more force then that of the law. if the prophet forgave slights against his person by non muslims, who are these people to decide what is blasphemous and what isnt. That is for god to take offense to...not man.
yes Pakistan is in the stongeages...and yes...our posts do nothing to elevate it from its state of despair.
Just a couple of points worth mentioning. Anthony Permal mentioned almost from day one that the CIA-RAW-Mossad were involved in Faryal's blasphemy case. He omitted to mention the really bad guys in MI6. The second point, and this is the important one, has Faryal's teacher, Fareeda Bibi, who caused all the trouble in the first place been brought to book over this, and has she apologized?
The Ottoman Empire had it right. Send them all on free trip to Haaj, except send them on a lovely cruise. All of them. Then bomb the crap out of it. It'll be forgotten after one generation then we'll all be able to get on with living normally.
A nation which imposes laws which refutes logic and where irrationality and supersition prevails is destined to go backward. No wonder why pakistan is having low progress both economically and culturally, People are looking backward.
I am not really certain whether Pakistan children are all potential Ph.D. candidates or not? However, when reading comments by people such as Maulana Alla Dita Khateeb of Gol Masjid, who said that he had examined Faryal's exam paper and found it sacrilegious, I am starting to wonder. My knowledge of Urdu is extremely limited, but Faiz (Sept. 26) appeared to explain quite succinctly the difference between LANNAT and NAAT, and if he is correct the difference is one tiny wriggle-like character with a pen. Although, as some nauseatingly religious people have explained, most people of Faryal's age would know the wriggle difference between Lannat and Naat, they have not explained the psychological pressures which build up under exam conditions, and lead on to errors occurring. Further to this I have found quite often that not only do I make spelling and punctuation errors, I sometimes leave out a whole word, which changes the entire point of what I am attempting to portray, and I am certain many other people do also, without any malicious intent. Summing up, I thought when I went to school some 60 odd years ago that some of my teachers were a little tough, and have felt somewhat mentally bruised ever since, but upon re-examining my situation I now realize how fortunate I am that I was not sent to Faryal's school. Better still, Maulana Alla Dita Khateeb was not reviewing my written work.
@Pieter van Lieshout: dear sir, "laanat" means 'cursing someone' and "naat" means 'words said in praise of our Prophet PBUH'...hope that make u understand the situation.
Obama, you are the same supporting that it is right to kill for blasphemy to prevent the spread of fire? Do not see what crime is the only think that a girl have to be so severely punished for something so meaningless? That's why your country is considered in the third world (rather in the fourth)
The funny part is how such "so called innocent mistakes" are always made by Christians and not Muslims!
I was in eight grade once too! I was not stupid and neither was I naive! The girl should have known better! Furthermore the paper was an urdu paper and not an english paper. Hence simply saying that LA ( dot) Naat was the mistake is down right stupid! The paper was not in english! Try spelling the same thing in urdu and you will understand exactly what i mean! It was not an innocent mistake and an eight grader is not an innocent child!
Ask any real teacher what he/she thinks about eight grade students! They are not children in this day and age anymore! We knew everything. We knew about all the taboos of our society and we were by no means innocent by then!
It can never be a deliberate thing. Minorities in the country know that they live amongst radicals or extremists. They are sure to do any such act would be suicidal, they matter could have been well settled if that teacher proved semblance with intellects. Poor handling of matters is a grave problem in the country. The case of Asia bibi is an example too. Pakistan has a good combination of radicals, fools, and illiterate and anti americanism adds fuel to the fire. True facts never come to the surface and people never tend to investigate whether or not it is a blasphmey.
what are some open ended questions in this article that would start a great argument
Shame on Moulana,,, I agree with Hashmi, its worse than ” P A T H E T I C “, my sympathies for poor little girl and the family. We need to reign in those bearded men, taking our societies control, and heading us into complete trouble.
Just one word " P A T H E T I C "
The rising extremism can not be controlled by just condemning on blogs and English papers. It requires sincere and well thought process to stop it at first and then get it back to its zero position. English papers are mostly read by minority in Pakistan but our national Urdu media never dare to highlight any such issue due to fear of backlash. It is however responsibility of state to take swift actions to reverse this rising trend of extremism, otherwise it will reach to every one's door step sooner or later.
The face of Pakistan is not represented by the 2% extremists that make part of the news with whatever they continue doing. It is up to the other 98% people of Pakistan that are nowhere in the picture to tell the real story. Its people like myself who know things are going wrong but are too laid back to do something about it. We may be living on this land, but it seems to have been hi-jacked by people and forces that have no real connection to the country.
We feel sorry for the young girl, it is a mistake anyone could have made. We do not divide on the base of cast, color or religion. Islam's teaching clearly forbid us from any such things and so does humanity. It doesn't matter what religion the girl belongs to, she is one other child belonging to this country and has equal right and representation.
... utter sense of insecurity ...
Although I am well educated, possess reasonably good English skills, and went through to university level, I never fail to be amazed at mistakes I have made when I re-read what I have written. Obviously, I would makes spelling and grammatical errors under exam conditions. It is interesting to note that some comments are unforgiving when they say that "Faryal could not have made the mistake", when she explained that it was a mistake. In answer to those people who think they are perfect, I can only quote a famous Eastern poet who once said, "Anyone who does not know and does not know that he does not know is stuck forever in double ignorance".
let's ask that maulana sahab to write it and other such words and see how many mistakes he makes!
@Anthony Permal: i totally agree with you, brother.
I have my deepest sympathies for the poor and innocent girl and her family. These xenophobic have no respect for religion and the poor countrymen. But their sanctimonious character is not just hurting the minorities but even the believers of the same faith. One such incident happened to a doctor who was not accommodating a Medical sales Rep. The salesman was requesting the doctor to allow him some time to make a sales call and put his visiting card on doctor's desk. The doc on the contrary was reluctant to give time time and out of desperation throw away his visiting card in the dustbin. Incidentally, the sales rep name had some religious connotation which was good enough a reason for the dejected salesman to call it a case of blasphemy.
We all need to put our acts together against these fanatics who are leveraging religion for their personal vendettas.
It has been the nature of the muslim nowadays that if they are doing mistake they dont bother but if the annnocent girl did mistak so it leads to blasphemy. sham on us. when we will become a good muslime to play a leading role ? If she has done mistake intentionally so how we are to ask her.she is also creature of ALLAH and its the right of our ALLLAH to ask her and this duty dont assign to us .
erroneously ? You can never misspell "naat" as "laanat". One in a million chance that it wasn't a deliberate execution.
@Fatima: i agree with you.
@MUNIB: i totally agree with you, brother.
In retrospect Faryal should consider herself lucky she was not an italian in the 16th century. If you countered dogma deliberately in the Christian religion at that time the Vatican had a few rather unique ways of punishing the culprit. One punishment that comes to mind is were the executioner smashed every bone in your legs and then made you crawl to the stake were you burnt to death. I suppose that mankind has improved a little on those times in some ways. However, in case Muslims are feeling a little embarrassed about what they did to Faryal, it pales into insignificance compared to what the Western powers have been doing in the Middle East.
@Pieter van Lieshout: Dear Sir, Naat is a poetic tribute to the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and the word "Laanat" means to be damned. These words when written in the urdu language have the mere difference of a single dot. These crazy fundos have a habit of blowing everything out of proportion just to show themselves as very important. We need to shun such people and their interpretation of Islam.
@Muhammad Waqas Luqman: Dear Muhammad, I have constantly noticed that people writing comments appear to massacre the English language, with grammatical and spelling mistakes, but I still understand what they are trying to portray.. I am sure that most of the people making mistakes are adults, but I am not critical of them. They are having a go. You in fact, made several mistakes which were comparable, in English, to "Lannat" and "Naat", and in an English exam you would be lucky to get a "B". However, although I do not agree with what you said in regard to the technicalities of Urdu, you wrote a good, well thought out article. I think anybody with an iota of commonsense would have said to the young 8th grade, if it was a class test, "you made a mistake; make sure you do not do it again". End of story.
The land of the pure does not cease to surprise us. For heavens sake how could these people accuse an Eight grader of blasphemy. The poor girl may not even be aware of the difference between our ALLAH and Christian's God. the irony is that her family is being accused of her conduct and even after she apologized she was expelled and her mother transferred. Since when did Islam the religion which teaches tolerance became so rigid? I think we need to see where we are heading!!!
Reading all the comments makes an outsider realize how much kindness, caring and thoughtfulness exists within the Muslim community. It will give me a lot more confidence when visiting Pakistan or dealing with Muslim people anywhere. One generally, only hears about Muslims treating females badly in the Western press.
@S Raza Moshin: try to read what you quoted from Iqbal's poetry again. it was absolutely correct, how on earth's face anyone could raise the blasphemy thingy against these lines. any thing that drifts you away from Allah Almighty's command is fitna and thats the fact. theres a difference btw reading and understanding!
i am quite sure..this is not our religion..Our religion and politics has been hostaged by garbage of our society.Islam is nt that narrow.
ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGEOUS!HORRENDOUS!!DISGUSTING !If dis is clld blasphemy I wud "misspell" it over a 100 times!!! sympathise wid dis child n her fly!M SO GLAd n feel BLESSED 4 being in INDIA!!at least v Christians don't hav such petty n nonsensical issues !I can only pray 4 u guys!!God Bless!
@Larry:
Not everyone in Pakistan is an extremist just like not everyone in USA is a redneck. Our society has been polarised. And although we are responsible for it but the west also has to see what thier actions are doing in countries in Pakistan.
Stop War. Killing innocent people is terrorism, regardlesss if it is done my a bearded arab in a plane or a marine with a gun.
I wonder how many times Allama Iqbal would have been convicted of Blasphemy if he was born in this age.
Khuda say jo door karay woh shamsheer bhi fitna Shamsheer kya hai, Naray-eTakbeer bhi fitna
@Ikramuddin Akbar - I'm that someone from across the border you referred to. And I can speak on behalf of most here, that such incidents sadden us to the core rather than make our day.
@Umar Jawed: As her Urdu is weak was appropriate action taken?
I am a Muslim just to make it clear. I don't understand...Islam teaches tolerance and there is none here whatsoever. Be it deliberate or a mistake this is still a child so instead of patience and good logic we are punishing a young child of this own country? Even our Prophet P.B.U.H forgave his enemies who dealt innumerable pains and suffering and we can't tolerate a written word? This is not the way...what just happened right now is another example of over reaction to the extreme.
the situation has been difused so sad the hazara division has the highest literacy rate in pakistan
Making a mountain out of a mole. Thank you Islam of Zia-ul Haq.
I don't really blame this Ditta Khateeb guy and numerous others like him. These illiterate, perverted pigs are above all law and rule because we, the people and the impotent government have allowed them to. If there are any real muslims in this country who believe in Jihad, then the enemies of Islam and humanity are on a rampage and duty calls to put them in their place.
LAANAT and NAAT are two different words!. She must have written it consciously. well, she had it.
How is it that everyone (it seems) knew what the word means and yet the Christian girl got such an extreme punishment? I'm reading AGENDA into this!
this comes as no big surprise to me. kinda expected from these pakis. can only wish that terik-e-taliban capture abbotabad like they did Swat and enforce sharia. the teacher who destroyed the life of that student and her fmly will be shut in her house and will have to wear whole body clothings, only when she faces the real brunt of the extreme islam she was 'protecting', will she realise thats its wrong to destroy lives based on a small unintentional mistake. As for the mullahs who took the decision, they will be probably bombed out of this world by one of our drones.
Ladies and Gentlemen allow me to present to you a ruling that is as simple as 2 + 2 = 4, which is "Might makes Right". This is the only law of universe, those who have power decide whats right and whats wrong and I completely endorse it. I challenge all who have left a comment before me to logically disprove this argument.
This is a great example of why it is a very bad idea to allow religion, of any kind, to influence governments.
Pakistan is a sinking ship.
u all need to learn Islam from scratch, even u Mullana's.
I have a question, if mis spelling Prophet PBUH is a crime. what happens to one if he misspeells Allah? Which a numerous amount of scholars have done till today. why was no action taken against them?
I simply don't understand how anyone-- regardless of their religion-- can be this way to a child and her family. While I lost my temper in an earlier post, and while it was wrong to do that, it seems unbelievable that a child is punished for an error like this.
Here's what I don't understand, and this is why the rest of the world cannot understand your part of the world.
K.
For those of us who don't live in Pakistan and who are not Muslim, and who don't speak Urdu, could anybody translate? What do the words ‘laanat’ and ‘naat’ mean? It's not much of a story without a translation!!
what the hell is wrong with these people. first of all why is she forced to study something that she is not supposed to. the subject is URDU and not religious study. we should respect other people religion. if they don't believe in something don't let them study that.
and can't a person make a mistake??? we all make mistakes. this is not what our Prophet PBUH taught us. he taught us tolerance and forgiveness. why cant we practice the same. we can change the girl's mind by ignoring her mistake and treating her with love. there is no advantage in beating and making a big deal out of it.
think about this. if my school forces me to learn poems that say "Jesus is God", which is contrary to my belief how would I feel?
forgive her and create an example of tolerance. just because of this bad attitude of Muslim our religion is getting a bad name. i hope people use some sense and just dont make a fuss.
God bless everyone.
Hypocrisy is just silly and stupid affirmation of dogma. a circular path that leads nowhere and that has no future. because such a large number of people do not have the courage to rebel against these atrocities? this is the real problem. now with social networks you can understand the world, the reality that surrounds us and learn quickly. that's why the government is trying to block access to Facebook. Wake up, before you are thrown back in history
Would she have faced all this if she was a Muslim girl???? This is something we should all ponder upon...
More than the post, the number of comments are mind boggling and hilarious. Being a christian girl, the vast reaction is possible due to the western societies involved. Western society is no less sensitive when it comes to a point of christianity.
I saw some comments from western names that suggest separation of Church and state. Why Church only? Does only Church mean a religion? For them, other religions are not religions.
Other thing I notice is that violence has become sanctified and those societies who do not indulge in widespread violence are not counted. This is a dangerous trend and must be taken into account.
And we wonder why we are unable to improve and modernize this country when we are so insecure in our beliefs that even an 8th grader can shake them!!!!!
@J.A. Young:
THANK YOU for explaining the differences between the words. It was a bit of shoddy reporting for this English version of the story to leave that important fact out.
Interesting story. But there was one aspect of it that is lacking for us non-Urdu speaking people from the Outside: an explanation of what the offensive word MEANS and what the intended word means. Just to say that a word is "offensive" to a Muslim tells us virtually nothing. There is a whole world of things that offends people of any "great" religion.
Lanat and naat when written in urdu are kind of easy to confuse. They look the same except for a couple of dots her and there. The real culprit is the teacher.
@Umar Jawed: With due respect a cousin of mine who studied in an urdu medium school failed in urdu miserably and her spellings were awful even when she was doing graduation. The point is that with education system like ours you can not rule out this possibility. Dear, we the English speaking classy people have a different world of our own. About the incident it is the reflection of who we are.
@A. E. Newman: They probably have em all stand in a line on a stage, like here, but with a firing squad aiming at each child as they attempt to spell, beads of sweat rolling down the sides of their face XD
This is exactly why seperation of church and state is absolutely critical.
This is the price the people of Pakistan must pay for allowing a theocracy to govern them. A country living with an 8th Century mentality who also possesses nuclear weapons, the whole world (including Islamic nations) are concerned. On the other hand, the mullahs who condone such barbarity toward children also allow mutilations, 'honor killings' of women and encourage terrorists to murder innocent Pakistani citizens do so 'in the name of Allah'. To those clerics and the people who support them, I have the following advice: "Look, up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's a drone.....BOOM!".The Pakistani people must rise up and protect their country from self-destruction. American taxpayers are tired of supporting a nation that stabs us in the back. How many Pakistanis knew Bin Laden was living in their country? What's the Urdu word for "Darwin Award"?
This is so sad, she is only a child. We all make mistakes... no one is perfect! I am sure they have made many mistakes but its all under the rug. God (Allah) forgives us... who are they to point fingers and to judge!?
May God give them grant them wisdom to do better and educate the children not punish them for stupid things!
Same thing happened to me. Except it was a nun at a Catholic grade school.
This is naat what I expected from the good people of Pakistan. This kind of reaction usually comes from Naatzis.
Wow. They allow girls in school? What a progressive Islamic country.
What do ‘laanat’ and ‘naat’ mean in English? I don't speak Urdu. BTW the public schools in the U.S. do stupid things too. They appropriately call it "zero tolerance" and call in the police to get the courts involved at the drop of a hat.
@michael amtin: Nothing wrong with that.
Why hasn't she been stoned? I will accept nothing less for such blasphemous conduct.
One more reason why other countries don't respect Pakistan. Ask yourselves how do you intend to redeem yourselves in the eyes of the rest of the world for this?
Particuarly sad that the so called educational system missed yet another oppportunity to educate and explain, developing knowledge which helps tolerance and cohabitation of differing beliefs. The comment below by the reader above is spot on as it shows how arrogant we humans can be: " There ought to be a special punishment for the lunacy of assuming your God to be so insecure as to require you to protect His honour from an eight-grader."
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught tolerance and kindness to bring people towards Islam, but our moulvis are pushing people away with hate. Under these types of moulvis, people learn sectarian hatred, disputes and qita-e rahmi. Muslims should read the life story of Prophet Muhammad and the way he established system of dawaa-o-trabiyat.
The only blasphemy here is that these religious authorities are completely inhumane and absurd in their behavior.
Blasphemy laws have little to do with God and everything to do with making these little religious authoritarians feel important and powerful.
Why don't these people rise up against these authoritarian lunatics who call themselves "Religious"
Here in America if a kid has sex with another kid, both of them go to jail and are branded sex offenders for life.
There in Pakistan if a kid misspells a few words, he is trussed up on blasphemy charges.
I fail to see a significant difference.
Yet another example of why the world would be better with no religion. How do people seriously think that an imaginary being would be mad at this. People can be so ridiculously stupid.
It's antiquated and superstitious beliefs like that which help hold the world back. The repress themselves and regress humanity. On country sentenced a woman to lashings for driving a car. Pakastan beats little girls for spelling errors. If there wouldn't be so many innocent people hurt it would be better to turn all that sand to glass....
As an American, it makes me glad to see that the vast majority of the comments on this story condemn the actions against a girl for what is essentially a misplacement of a dot and a line (I'm judging from earlier comments; I don't read Urdu).
To those who said that comments on a website don't make any difference, be aware that this story is on the front page of Google News worldwide and your comments are being read. It is important for people who don't know much about Pakistani society to know that Pakistanis, and Pakistani Muslims in particular, are ashamed of those who use Islam as a way to attack others.
Can we possibly have anything in common with these people? Stop giving them aid and cut all ties to them.
Why not push the teacher for failing to teach the child not to make mistakes then the school administrators for failing hire the best teachers then the elected officials and religious leaders for putting the school administrators in their posts? The seem to do a great job teaching ignorance and enforcing a jaded interpretation of the teachings of their religion in order to greedily maintain power.
Makes me glad to be an American and not a Muslim. Sorry, but it does. I believe everyone has the right to their own religious freedoms, but this smacks of this specific group (not necessarily Muslims as a whole though) of being radically prejudicial. Its hard to defend a group against prejudice when they clearly do not make sense, even when educated individuals are involved. To be ostracized for a spelling error, a misplaced dot of all things is insane.
Muhammad Sadaqat apparently made a sanction-free error as well: "sacrilegious" was merely a similar type of error and will result in...nothing, as it should.
@Larry: thanks its nice to see people who think for peace.
This is why a secular society is so much better than one in which religious extremism reigns. I'm talking to you, republicans!
In islam only MUFTI is allowed to give verdict. but here every tom dic and harry mulvi gives verdict and we follow the UJRATIs.(PAID leader of prayers) when would we know the proper islam
Forgive my ignorance, but as a non-muslim, this level of cruelty seems to be pretty much standard behavior in the islamic community.
Please explain these words!
Subhanallah The Prophet salalahualayhiwasalam let of a slandering adult, head of hypocrites, Abdullah ibn ubay ibn Salul the worst enemies of Islam and Muslims.
But apparently these Mullahs are too good for mercy. So a dot error is a reason to punish people.
If you can't show mercy, don't expect any from God. The first names of Allah we hear as Muslims are that he is Ar-RahmanurRahim. Ar-Rahman. Ar-Rahim. Ar-Rauf. And these Mullahs have to interpret a dot as blasphemy. Well I refuse to pray for them.
The Prophet salalahualayhiwasalam who was sent as a MERCY to the worlds said "He who does not show mercy to others will not be shown mercy". (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim,The two most authentic collections of hadith in existence.) Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As: The Prophet said: Those who do not show mercy to our young ones and do not realize the right of our elders are not from us (Sunan Abu Dawud).
Ya Rahman show mercy to this girl and her mother and protect them both and all humans from the likes of these men!
This girl should be moved to America where she can worship as she wishes. Maybe even convert to Islam.
ALLAHHU AKBAR
As an American retired teacher, I am really glad to read the previous comments. That poor girl! The teacher should have just privately showed the girl her mistake and moved onwards. Frankly, we have religious extremists of all faiths in my country also, but we try very hard to counter them. This is why our public schools, which are the majority of schools, cannot push any particular religious faith.
salam to all, I, as a pakistani living in uk am totally shocked at the treatment of this young girl, these so called ulemas should learn from prophet muhammad (saw) himself, have they forgotten the incidence of a christian man who urinated in the prophets mosque, in the prophets presence, and the prophet just told his companians to wash it away with water, and seeing this compassion of the prophet the man eventually accepted islam. how can anyone in the right frame of mind put a young girl and her family through this trauma? all this for a mere spelling mistake? this kind of behaviour drives people further away from the essence of islam.
these so called lovers of the prophet need to remind themselves that 90% of the arabs who embraced islam in the time of the prophet was due to the compassionate nature and behaviour of the prophet. the prophet would invite the christians to his mosque they stayed there in the mosque and prayed at their alloted time while the muslims prayed at their time, this was the character of the great man called muhammad messenger of allah (saw). have these mullahs forgotten the quranic verse " the nearest to you (muslims) in religion are those that say we are christians".
peace to all
@Umar Jawed:
Who but God could know the intentions of ones heart. You are calling her guilty or stupid. Your opinion is worth so much less than her human rights and "Quite Weak" perhaps.
this beyond ridiculous. this is the flipside of falwell's claim that katrina was punishment from the god.
christohper hitchens is absolutely right about religions.
The God I know will damn the perpetrators of the injustice to this little girl. Pray to allah all you want, but your intolerance will burn you in hell!
It is a pity to read about this country. Pakistan has become a sinking ship!
And to think Pakistan has nukes. What a contrast.
In America, there are organizations that stand up for individual's rights when an organization acts in an illegal way. For free. Are there anti-discrimination laws? Is there a court system that can be appealed to? Whether religious or secular?
This is what happens when ANY religion is used to control rather than guide its followers.
@Foxbat: they have already stoned a goat to death for blasphemy, I remember reading several years ago in Pakistani one of the elders committed blasphemy and offered a goat to be killed in his stead and it was accepted. If your male in these Sharia states sometimes the "elders" will allow an animal to take your punishment for your sins.
As a United States citizen, it does my heart good to read that so many of you do not agree with this barbaric decision. I don't know much about the Pakistani government, but I hope that the reasonable citizens of your country can find a way to change the system that allows this kind of discrimination and cruelty. Stories like this also encourage anger and discrimination against Muslims here in the US. Currently, we have laws to anti-discrimination laws to protect non-Christians, but there are some politicians, churches, and media personalities who use incidents like this to stir up anti-Muslim sentiment.
I liked this article. It showed prejudices based on social or religious orientation -- by both the teachers, as well as the readers with their comments.
Are you actually serious? Do you really believe God, maker of the universe and creator of humanity would actually be offended by a mistake? People, really, get a hobby, buy a dog, do something, anything cause all this religion is clearly not good for the rational mind.
For Christ's sake! What the hell is wrong with these people?! I'm a Muslim from India. Went to Catholic schools where everyday we recited "Our Father in Heaven" during assembly. Yes, Muslims, Hindus and Christians. Our principal was an Irish priest. The chapel was the most peaceful place in the whole school. Forever proud to be a "Josephite". My son's name is Esa, which as some of you know is the Arabic equivalent of Jesus. Thank God I'm from India. Jinnah must be turning over in his grave for what Pakistan has become.
The crusades begain in order to help those that were getting badly treated by the muslims.
The lowest point in christianity was when the spanish treated the muslims in the manor that the muslims treated everyone else.
Americans- take note. Horrors like this is what continued attempts at turning the US into a theocracy will yield
My jaw dropped and I was very saddened to see this story. I was almost about to write it off as another example of the lunacy of "those Muslims".
But when I read the comments, I was delighted to see so many followers of Islam speak up in defense of this child. You, the defenders of this child, are the truly religious, pious people; and not those who tortured this girl and her family. May Allah give you the strength and wisdom to rescue your religion from the hands of those who are defiling it in His name.
Virtual reality takes many forms, mostly nonsense. Why bother with fairy stories?
I don't believe that she intended it as slander, but if she did, I say that the behaviour of the school and community have retroactively shown that they merit this slander.
Hello. Didn't see where this article was posted until i started reading some comments Seeing so many people that are from Pakistan and or are Muslim, condemning this is to say the least is a mind changer for me personally. I wish more of you would post to articles in our news about such incidents and give your views on them.It would go a long way in changing peoples minds here,in the US,.
What a disgrace! I am a Muslim Pakistani and this is just completely unacceptable! By Allah, these people have no idea what the Shariah says on "blasphemy". Shes just a 13 year old girl and does not deserve any of that especially when it is absolutely understandable how she couldve made a mistake...It is a shame any of this is happening, the Prophet (pbuh) would be the first to disassociate himself from their actions.
May Allah guide our Ummah..Ameen
It would help out foreign readers of the article if images were provided of what the words look like, and how the difference would seem blasphemous to a reader.
When a religion and culture becomes this petty it's not far from the end. The fear that must exist among the religious leaders must be staggering. Everyone is a threat to them. Allah does not need their protection so what are they protecting against...thier own power and control that is slipping away. Pak needs a "Spring" as so many other nations in the region are experiencing. Pak could be a stronger nation and economy than Turkey if it were not for their fear and prejudice. What a shame.

It is a spelling error, you moron! You are the type of freaks who make Pakistan look bad.
I bet the spelling bees in Pakistan are a hoot.
Hmm... Is that a tactic to convert the girl to Islam ? Pakis dont seem to like other religions to exist in their country however they are willing to throw stones/shout slogans at the slightest perceived insult to any muslim in some obscure part of the world. Pakis seem to already have mindset of people of stone age. I think US will be doing a favor by bombing it into stone age. Then they can live blissfully with their stones and islam.
Sigh, why do these people insist on behaving like a bunch of Muslims?
@Michael Carl: He also asked his followers to kill the apostate.
@Dude:
Quoting You:
"Sick blasphemy law. No wonder Pakistan still leaves in stone age."
Me: I believe the proper spelling is "lives in stone age."
Now bend over for your 40 lashings infidel!
You would be nuts too if you had to put up with their zealous religious beliefs....
Okay so maybe we Americans are not the most ignorant and intolerant people in the world after all.
Religion makes you stupid. There will be no peace on Earth until the last remnants of all religions are wiped out.
Those who believe in any god are fools... and fools act foolishly... Fools.
I am a 2nd generation native-born American who is of Jewish ancestry, raised as a Protestant, and married in the Catholic church. I have lived in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and with this religious diversity, and close contact with many ethnic cultures, I consider myself extremely tolerant of others. Members of my extended family were victims as well as survivors of the Holocaust, what was arguably the most egregious act of Man's inhumanity to Man in history. With that said, I think I have to right to say that this story is an example of Islamic extremism at its worst. I would be interested to hear from the teacher, the school administration, and the religious leaders who were involved in this incident how they justify such actions against the members of their society least able to defend themselves, their children. I am not anti-Pakistan ot anti-Islam. I am anti- anyone who would inflict physical and psychological harm on a child for any reason. Where I live, such people are dealt with severely.
typical response of Homo neanderthalensis. Incidentally dudes this is the 20th century. Human kind has already discovered magic things like "hot water" doooo
Why do we help Pakistan and these religious terrorists?
Im surprised they havent turned her into a suicide bomber yet. I say send the leaders of this place to the same place seal team 6 sent binladen.
This isn't about Islam, it's about any religion and especially fundamentalist religion. 150 years ago Christendom was killing Mormons, 200 years ago Christendom was burning heretics and witches. The gravest danger is in the USA where christian fundamentalists want a return to theocratic ways and elimination of the clause separating the power of the state from the ways of the church. Look at the seething hatred of Obama, gays, Mexicans, atheists, muslims in America. We're no better than the Muslims and if that separation of church and state is eliminated then the religious police will start to sanitize America. Not even God will be able to help us then.
It will be a relief when scientists are finally able to generate awareness inside synthetic brains and the ensuing superior robot race overthrows us and locks us up in a zoo for their amusement. Wait, maybe that has already happened .....
This just helps prove that the version of Islam that is practiced in many parts of the world is VIOLENTLY biased against anything but Islam.
This poor girl.....The word (in urdu) apparently is only different by one dot.... ONE DOT...... . . . . ....
Lanaat versus Naat are only different by ONE DOT.
This world is insane....I fear for Pakistan.
And my tax dollars are supporting these whack jobs?
And this is a country that has nuclear weapons? PLEESSSSSEEEEEEE!
The christian girl sure didn't do well on the islamic part of the exam.
How well then did the muslim children do on the christian part of the exam?
Merely saying you have tolerance does not make it so. A truly tolerant person does not have to claim as such, because his actions prove it.
The saddest part of this is that the silence in defense of this child at a time of need was deafening. It doesn't matter what religion you follow, you should represent it with honor at these times and stand up to this kind of thing and stop it BEFORE the child is harmed and her mothers life destroyed. It should NOT ever matter what religion you are, when the defense of innocent children are at stake. To NOT defend a child, muslim, christian, hindu, jew, african, asian or whatever, and put your personal whim above that child's welfare makes a person into the purest evil.
Look upon others with kindness, and protect the innocent no matter what religion they were born into.
Hmmm, if Pakistan ever wants to become a genuine part of modern society and the world economy, they need to start treating fanatics as fanatics. Accepting or even promoting this sort of 12th century idealism will surely put them in the same cast as North Korea. Good luck with that.
@Prahaar: naat means to praise god, while la-anat means that "may (he/she) be deprived of God's blessings." This is ridiculus that this would be blasphemy, especially when it was a mistake. Those that call it Blasphemy I hope are la-anat, for they do not know how to forgive, and if you do not have the heart to forgive, you are not following the teachings of Muhammad.
Religion: Spreading the stupid out to all mankind since to days of old. Sad that little kids are tormented by nutjobs devoted to strange myths.
I don't understand all these anti-Muslim comments.
This is Pakistan we are talking about. And the great Muslim religion is over 1300 years old. Islam is the very core of Pakistani culture and thinking. Foreigners often profess their lack of understanding of the deep gulf between India and Pakistan. It is not the food, it is not the dress, it is not the all the shared culture of thousands of years; it is Islam. Either you are a believer, or you are not.
Islam is a religion. A belief in a way of life, a meaning of life, set forth by God, as explained to the people by Muhammed. Plain and Simple.
If the God fearing people of Pakistan believe that what this girl did is offensive to God, then she got off very lightly -- in accordance with the great (but not boundless) mercy of God. You don't mess around with God, you know.
I thought at first I thought this was a reprint from a 16th century newspaper when I saw the heading. In this day and age that people who adhere to such nonsene is beyond the pale. This little girl should be given a medal and a million dollars for all the abuse she has had to endure from these wackos and her accusers should be put in a prison for the crimmally insane.
Religion makes all people stupid!
@Muhammad Waqas Luqman: You do not think the little girl can make a mistake, yet you have so many mistakes in your comment that I became tired of counting after the second paragraph.
@Nasir: When is there any positive news?
@Umar Jawed: are u nuts?
Here we go, ramping up the general disdain for Pakistan in order to sway American opinion so that when the U.S. invades more people will be on board.
Just another country we support with our tax $. I'd pull all foreign aid from the Arab world. Bunch of savages.
Same thing happened to me in 8th grade. I was in a Catholic school and they asked me to spell the name of the holy mother of god and I spelled "L-A-R-R-Y."
Nun beat the hell out of me for that.
Well. In English it's obviously a very different word, but by the comments it's rather more subtle in Urdu. Not speaking nor writing Urdu, I cant speak to how easy it is to make this mistake but apparently it's not a big difference.
But this is supposed to be a Christian school? They're undeserving of the name. I've never heard of such an irrational overreaction to such a tiny transgression.
Proof positive that you don't have to be Muslim to be a unforgiving fundamentalist that twists and profanes the faith you preach. I denounce you, Sir Syed school. I judge you and find you wanting.
And that's coming from me, an admitted sinner. You guys suck.
Clowns. But sadly, for hundreds of years, leaders of my own religion (Christianity) behaved no differently. We can only hope the spiritual and emotional evolution of the Pakistani people moves more quickly.
Words such as "blasphemy" have no place in evolved society.
Freeks.
Well violence is the way of religion. All religion is like this. Who is surprised?
What good hath religion brought? Not enough to overcome the evil that it is.
I wish there was an invisible, tasteless, odorless gas that would make people more tolerant and more rational. That's what we need to use on these maniacs who will ruin the life of a child (and someone who is 14 is still a child) and of her family over a spelling mistake.
If indeed Allah is almighty and forgiving, I am sure he is not worried too much about a simple and harmless spelling error made by a child in a backwater village of a country (and unfortunately, I use the word loosely) which has FAR more serious problems that this could ever be. Where's your sense of proportion, people?
I did a little research. According to one online Urdu Dictionary the word ‘laanat’ that was taken as so offensive means “Damn”. I can use my imagination to see how this would be considered disrespectful. On the other hand the other word ‘naat’ means a poetry that specifically praises the Islamic prophet Muhammad. So unless she used the two words together, I see no intent on the girl’s part.
This is not very flattering for Pakistan. Disapprove.
@Dude: lives*
Ah yes, the religion of peace,,,, gotta love the muzzies..
@Ali Ahmed Khan: Or whipped! Why whip a little girl for such misspelled word.?
@hammad: Do you mean "her" when you say "him"? You need to be claimed as a blasphemer according to those clods who hurt that young lady, watch out, your name betrays you!
Youll pardon us who dont speak Urdu, but I wonder if you might have found time in your article to explain the definitions of ‘laanat’ and 'naat'. Since the entire accusation is based upon their meanings, it might have been a good thing to include, yes?
Mi to no lake speeling missteks or gremmer missteks.
@Ali Khan - You have yourself made a spelling mistake for Laanat. You have misspelled it as "lanaat". The mistake is of misplaced "a". So what is applicable/allowable for you, should be for that 8th grader as well :-)
Below is your qutoe - "This serves her right. No one, including, a child has any right to say anything our prophet (PBUH). Shame on those of you who have condemned what happened to her. in 8th grade you have to know the difference between lanaat and naat. Those of you who understand what lanaat means will agree with me"
Those in America who would put the religious right in power should look at nations such as Pakistan. Laws and government crafted by religious dogma clear a path toward ignorance and the enslavement of women. This is why so much of the Muslim world is being cheated out of its rightful place as a part of enlightened humanity.
I can't begin to fathom how a civilization that was at one time among the most developed in the world slid into such a repressionary intellectual backwater, except that I see the very same forces at work in American society among the so-called Tea Party. We're not at Pakistan's level yet, but that's certainly the course we're on.
Attention Mr. Zahid Anwar, this is what everybody is shouting and crying that why you are following Mullah-izm, why not following what Holy prophet said or what Holy Prophet did.............?
Blasphemy is a victimless crime
All you people blasting off the decision of the maulavi are not well versed in Quran, but Maulana Alla Dita Khateeb, who is a scholar of Quran, has supported the decision. Given that a person knowledgeable in Islam is supporting this admittedly harsh punishment, we will have to agree that this is the real Islam. You may say that real Islam is harsh, you may say that real Islam is bad, but when a scholar Maulana says that the punishment is appropriate, we, the people who only have only read Quran once and don't even regularly pray five times a day, cannot say that this was a wrong decision.
The teacher, the school administration and religious leaders - what is happening? I can understand that normarly the ZEALOTS will take such action. And for the mother to be transferred due to the childs error??? So many learned people involved !!!!! WOW !!!!!
The girl did it on purpose. I hate her for that.
Ali Khan.."This serves her right. No one, including, a child has any right to say anything our prophet (PBUH). Shame on those of you who have condemned what happened to her. in 8th grade you have to know the difference between lanaat and naat. Those of you who understand what lanaat means will agree with me." ..............Tell me Ali khan, Because it is" right" and necessary the stoning to death for blasphemy? You do not feel inferior to a rat when you say that? NObody has the right to kill another human being, especially for something as insignificant. like that......what is a crime for you is actually nonsense. Because a religion that defines itself peaceful uses the word .."kill"? Does not seem absurd to you? Do not be surprised if your country is still in the Stone Age, the blame is merely your you do not know to rebel against 'ignorance and fear that is instilled in your schools. wake up The world will not wait long.
But why the non muslim girl was being taught Naat in the school. How will we feel if our daughters are taught about Raam, Seeta, and are taught to praise the story. Pity on our muslims. for the last about 1200 years we are being targeted for our radical ideas but are not ready to learn the lessons. Islam teaches us the message of love and peace. We have ensured that the girl in question remains fearful and afraid from Islam. And how a molvi can read the intention of a girl. We must think that why it is only pakistan which is the taget of natural and manmade calamities. May be we are drastically wrong in understanding our own Allh's Message.
a thing no one want to listen about blasphemy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) forgave all those people who used to throw stones at him they used to say all things about islam and he used to say may Allah guide these people and show them the path this blasphemy law was introduced by the british in i think 1920 to curb down religous tensions between hindus and muslims general zia only intensified it a but who is listening to me that girls family wll migrate to some other city maybe islamabad many christians in islamabad didnt came in islamabad for jobs but they came freeing extremists
@R S JOHAR: same thing was said during 2007
Teacher should be polite to her student, she should teach her the correct spelling. Even then she insist on the said word then she should be punished. If she accepts the error then she is innocent. This whole incident is the creation of the teacher who is not a teacher but just a worker earning money.
it is so unfortunate that in a country where religious tolerance and muslim brotherhood was the order of the day, we have come to this stage. Is it only blasphemous to punish someone for saying something offensive against our Prophet Sallal La Ho Elahi Wasalum, wat abt the people who are disobeying him? who are not following the true teachings of love, peace and equality of the Greatest man? wat abt the animals who killed the innocent and unarmed ppl on a bus? what abt the ppl who live in Aiwan -e- sadar and jati umara but talk of equality? i may be the worst and most sinful person to have walked on this planet earth but i am an Aashiq e rasool but to commit a crime of the sort in the name of blasphemy its hideous, these ppl should if they have courage denounce the acts of disobedience of Sunnah rather then accusing helpless poor ppl
Feel sorry for the girl & her family! she's unfortunate that she lives in Pakistan being Cristian! Extremism & intolerance is a plague! extremist maulvis are spreading this plague. Should send these moulvis to No Mans Land or LALA Land so they suck each others brain (If they have any)
well she myt havent done it on purpose but y to create such a news there are millions of muslims suffering this prejudice evry day n they ll much more in number too m not supporting this thing just asking y isnt that the news .......may b because it is so huge in number dat cant be summarized with in the paper if u are making it a news i ask your morality to create a section regaurding this thing so that it may be erdicated for every 1
is this a joke now, the prophet of Allah would have never wanted people implicated for these purposes. shame on this society.
@Ali Khan You are exactly the kind of person why Islam is perceived the way it is. 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth'. You will be judged in exactly the same way that you judge others. I will pray for you so that one day you will find peace!
As Pakistanis we should hang our head down in shame or just change the name of our country to Mullahstan. A truly sad, sad day for all of us
Now we know why Allah is punishing us every year. He is humiliating us we run to the west or atheist China for help. Are we muslims really?
What is wrong with our people and country!
I am speechless, Pakistan is rapidly heading towards disaster, no wonder we are fast becoming the most disliked nation.
Too many tragedies have taken place, the Sialkot killings, the recent massacre in Karachi, our own government robbing the poor, millions homeless from the floods and no one to turn to, and all this is the wrong doing by Pakistanis.
We really need to take responsibility for our own situation and sort this mess out and not keep blaming India and the US for everything wrong in our country!
Frankly, embarrased to be a Pakistani!
Even if the act were intentional, and I don't believe it was, when did the All Mighty start needing the protections of puny men and women from even the most determined attack a eigth grade girl can muster on any of his prophets? Do you believe the All Mighty so weak that he can not defend himself, his prophets, and all of heaven and earth from the awesome might of a little girl? He knows her heart and mind better than any earthly agent,be it a religious scholar, school teacher, administrator or otherwise. And he will do whats appropriate. When he deems the time is appropriate.
Do not put yourselves in the place of the All Mighty. My humble understanding is that he does not look kindly on those who do.
The most her act deserved from any human being was a scolding for her poor spelling and inattention to detail and a extra assignment of copying the word correctly perhaps twenty times. Leave the judgement of wheteher she intended blasphemy,of whats in her heart and mind,to he who created all hearts and minds.
He really dosen't need your help in such matters.
This serves her right. No one, including, a child has any right to say anything our prophet (PBUH). Shame on those of you who have condemned what happened to her. in 8th grade you have to know the difference between lanaat and naat. Those of you who understand what lanaat means will agree with me.
@Touqeer Izhar: She forgot a dot. Get over it. Young girls,or boys for that matter, are not always well focused every moment of the school day.
@sarah: You mistakenly spelled "reality" as "realty", Was that a deliberate insult or just a simple error? And why should I believe you? There must be consequences! This must not stand!
How sad that a smal mistake got so out of hand
teacher should be blame for this, if she saw first she can avoid the mistake. The role of teacher is not good over here.. or may be she wants a attention to make this issue complex. Action should be taken against school and Teacher not against the child.
If they think, punishing a child unjustly, Oppressing people, holding rallies with sticks and weapons, causing troubles, firing up things, making violent speeches would please Allah then they should Quran and Hadith again. Allah loves who is just to the people, who is calm and patient and who does not spread mischief on this world.
I wonder why those teachers and leaders can't understand the right from wrong. May Allah help that poor little girl and her family. Ameen.
@ Prabhjyot Singh Madan
You said that "I read somewhere that non Muslims study Pakistan studies there and not Islamic studies which is meant for Muslim students there. "
I would like to correct you that Non Muslims have the choice to study "ethics instead of Islamiat" as a compulsory subject. Pak studies is compulsory for everyone.
The present case is not about Islamist but Urdu. In Urdu, we study poems, ghazals as well as hymns as well. There are usually two hymns in the Urdu text book and rest are ghazals and poems. Teachers can skip that. They are not necessary. Wonder why concentrated on this issue?
ashamed this all happened because of lack of knowledge..she is a little girl if she misspelled just warn her why taking such a action OOO God where we living
What happens if the same scenario happens with a Muslim child in America? Suppose he wrote some praising word for Hitler or OBL mistakingly, then the Americans blames the child that he got some early education from the maderessah and blah blah...
Everytime Muslim will be titled as extremist!
and this would have never come to the international media.
Face the fact people. The seed of this madness was sown by the one and only ZIA UL HAQ. Look back at where Pakistani society stood before him and compare that with today. The man single handedly paved the way for this so called country to one day in the near future be obliterated. Murders, shootings, kidnapping, dengue, earthquakes, floods are the true curse of God on this country. These cursed mullahs are just tools of sheytan.
my heart goes out to the poor soul. just imagine what she n her mother might have gone through while facing that assembly of frowning self-righteous people!!! n i m afraid this is not the end of their punishment. n god will not come to save them. we ll have to change the mindset of the society n say NO to extremism n fanaticism.
Thank you Jinnah!
Love Christians in India.
Laanat means something along the lines of go to hell, while naat means the praise of the prophet. Its more than a spelling mistake. Regardless of that though, expulsion of an eighth grader is a bit harsh. Yes we muslims tend to be a little over emotional about our religion, and growing up in Pakistan, I know exactly how we tend to treat our Christian class fellows. We're all to blame, not them.
and you know guys, it was a mistake of one dot in Urdu language only......
We are degrading to a level where probably rodents have more intelligence left in their brain then ours, and all of that in name of "Honour". (from a sad Pakistani)
How such a student with such weak urdu even reached 8th grade. Either it is delibrate or the school is seriously required to consider its educational standards.
My conclusion would be low educational standard. It may be highly unlikely but still possible.
But a 13-14 years old unable to write urdu is not easily acceptable thats why the teacher may have referred the act as delibrate.
Teachers should not press non-muslim children to read/write articles which they do not believe in. And students should be given courage to say that this topic may not be appropriate for oneself.
The fact is ... How many of you are still writing Urdu lately. @Umar Jawed: Write both the words in urdu and you will know the difference. She is 8th grader. i think i will go with Rochelle comments. If it was a urdu exam why is only the student held accountable. Why the teacher is being spared? isnt it because she is muslim. I am sure, if any of the muslim students would have made the same mistake. He/she mistake would have been overlooked. Anyways God help and protect us all. Islam is a beautiful religion but few muslim (the thaikedaar’s of Islam) are ruining its image.
Have you people any idea what this kind of thing does to Pakistan's international reputation? Which following the incident at Abbatobad isnt' too good anyway.
The 'ulema' should be asked to spell blasphemy in English!
a big CRAP
Denying a child the right to an education is blasphemy!
@Fayyaz Haider: "Very astonishig you all are. 8 grader 8 grader. Can any one tell what age may be of eight grader. Averag 13 years. Although young but she is not a lillte child. After passing 7 grades she is not able to distinct Naat and Laanat. A proper inquirey is required to avoid any serious issue." Look at the number of errors in your comment 1. Astonishig instead of astonishing 2. Averag instead of average 3. lilte instead of little 4. Inquirey instead of inquiry. You seem to be a young person. Now should you too also not be dealt with same severity as she is dealt with?
The point is a spelling error can occur. Instead of correcting the error, they have endangered the life of a girl.
@Hussain Aslam: If you can make a typo error "themistake", why can't a child make an error on "dot"?
To all the mullas and specialy the teacher and the school admin. thank u sooooo much for protecting us and islam from a 8 yr old terrorist girl. i wonder why you didnt stoned her to death????? the poor child will never forget what happened to her for the rest of her life :(
Very astonishig you all are. 8 grader 8 grader. Can any one tell what age may be of eight grader. Averag 13 years. Although young but she is not a lillte child. After passing 7 grades she is not able to distinct Naat and Laanat. A proper inquirey is required to avoid any serious issue.
It is my sincere hope that all these illetrate bafoons meet the same fate and get tangled in this very law themselves. The child is an eighth drader. The Prophet (PBUH) would have been in tears to see such mindlessness towards an innocent child, be it which ever faith. Even if it were deliberate for arguments sake, you under ni circumstances treat children like that. I hope each one of these people get beat up by a mob.
May be it is a kind of politics from Pakistani Christian to get favour from the world.
There's only one solution to this madness - and only one. Bulldoze and demolish each and every single Madrassa in Pakistan out of existence.
Blashphemy law demands death and evens practised by the Christians. Jesus said, 'But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin. (NIV) (Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is also referenced in Matthew 12:31-32 and Luke 12:10).
------>>>> This can be a childish mistake, i think we are jumping on hasty conclusions. When passing a judgement, we should also have to see a person's background, his/her age and the history of his/her family.
----->>>>>I see people are criticizing Islam here which they shouldn't do because mocking at religion would lead them to hell. Our system has many loop holes in it, if Islam was followed in a way then we wouldn't be experiencing these things. Its lack of education and moral ethics.
No one is against Islam everyone is against Jihad. So please stop bringing shame to your nation and try reforming it.
@Ahmed:BITTING IS ENOUGH.You mean a eight grader girl should be physically punished for such a small mistake.Glad Jinnah took u people away.
@Thomas Kurian: I agree with you that India is a secular state, but don't try to speak on behalf of "Hindu India', there are "Muslim India" there also more than you, to speak for themselves. By the way why didn't you success to save massacre of hundreds of Christians only a few years ago Plant of prejudice, hatred, love ,tolerance all grow side by side, in the same soil and no society is devoid of it. It's up to us which to nourish, and which to yank out from the soil.
Pakistan, what a loathsome place you've become. God Bless that student and her family.
we have a majority of muslims who are unpatriotic and now we are making christians unpatriotic too.
patheticness really has no limits... a very sick incident
My dear country has all the signs when a nation or a country implodes.
God I pray to you change their minds, Please God have mercy on Pakistan and its people they dont even know what they do.............Help them Lord..... Amen
Superstition gone mad.
Disgusting.
mashallah,a new level of low.sigh
POF is run by army and we can expect it to happen in cantt area. Such areas are safe for Usama but unsafe for an innocent girl.
@Observer: Just to answer your question ... many people go to Presentational Convent including majority of our family children and every one pray in front of cross in the morning whether Muslims or not ... and we don't have any problem with that .. as it doesn't change your religion .. and that's how it has been from generations .. But I do agree our curriculum in govt run schools is a joke and needs to be changed including the blasphemy law which has no place in religion even and should be revoked asap. Religious studies should not be compulsory in any school anywhere.
pakistanis do not stop making fools of themselves.
@Ali: What makes you so sure that it is not being done in India? You don't know anything about muslims in India.
@faiz:
It was not a mistake
@Nawaz salamat:
The Mom is transferred and the child is expelled and you are thanking the muslim brothers and sisters. You are a Pakistani Christian. I see the dhimmitude in you. Survival instincts I guess
@Zalmay: A Maulana himself has praised the decision to punish the child and transfer the mother. Are you more knowledgeble than the Maulana? You are not a true muslim. You should be punished for apostacy.
At the first place, why do Pakistani children, belonging to minorities, have to answer a question which is about Muhammad (PBUH) or about a poem written in holy prophets praise (Naa't)? It's a failure of our educational system and curriculum developers. Secondly, such a hue and cry on a mere slip of pen is simply uncalled for. Mistakes do happen even by Mullahs and we are here talking about an 8th grader female student.
May God help and bless United States of India and Pakistan for peace in the world.
Aahh, and this happened at a school named after Sir Syed. Has anyone noticed the irony?
The nation has gone to the dogs because we focus on the wrong things. It is pervasive throughout the Pakistani society.
The government should take over all madarsas and give these to the education department to run as regular government schools. The mullahs should be fired and pushed to the wayside.
@indian christian: You said "By the way, I am happy that INDIA and PAKISTAN got separated in 1947"
I am pretty sure Indian Muslims must also be saying this,
The mullas who are baying for the poor christian girl are actually insulting Mohd. Rasool (hope my spelling is correct!!) God is above all these trivialities
Further, why God has enetered the school syllabus ? why god and religion can not be in ones private domain? why force non muslims to learn about Islam ?
Imagine this is the state of affair in a proper govt school; now think what must be drilled in the head of small kids in hate spewing madarsas ?
pakistan please wake up Khuda Hafiz
kallu Mama
@Anthony Permal: i believe this might be a mistake but our people are getting so much emotionally fooled by others that they dont even consider what are they saying
A guilt shud be proven beyond reasonable doubt. when they werent sure of the intentions of the "accused" girl, why not let her go with a warning? after all this is what our Prophet (PBUH) taught us. No wonder our country is facing such trials and tribulations. when the general public cant be just, fair, humble and forgiving, y expect the rulers to be the same?
"Ignorance is bliss" but in Pakistan it is a crime.
Seems a competition as to who can be the most cruel and irrational in the name of the Religion of Peace.
Its Very Sensitive matter at all! This Type of Prompt Action would be good Practice to Stop Intentionality Blasphemy Acts.
It was not that difficult to find out the right reason behind this act. The urdu teacher could have asked the student to read the text (naat) she wrote just to find out her real intention. What she did was nothing more than mere ignorance.
@andleeb: And has the whole Islamic society come into action against that girl?Is there anything like that?.Don't be be so emotional .Have people started coming out of their homes in protest against that community in Karachi and Islamabad? It's like " BAGHAIR MAREY TAUBA" Cases like that is only possible in two areas of Pakistan whether you believe it or not, where some people have been and had been deeply inspired by fanatic movement by a group, and the whole nation is suffering. We cant shut our eyes on reality. We need to understand who and what kind of people have ruled here .Every educated and broadminded people of Pakistan know why it would happen and how long it would happen. The best way to eliminate these type of cases is to punish the teacher, and educate people , after all she had the responsibility to correct the error for what she was being paid . Finally Islam is not a man made religion that will be dented( God forbid) by incidents and happenings originated in a small school by a little girl. The moaning , whining of people across the border is easily understood.Incidents like this makes their day in their homes.
The concerned teacher and the administration should be given exemplary punishment so that no such incident happen in future. For God's sake think of young soul scarred for life.
@sashi: visit ambore camp muzzafarabad see orissa homeless people see dead dalits come one come all
This is really a harassment for a child. The girl has been kicked off from School, also her mother has been removed from her job in the hospital (Ref: www.express.com.pk dated: 26.09.2011).
I strongly condemn this violent behavior against non-Muslim in Pakistan.
The teacher and principal of the school should be sacked with immediate effect for punishing the student which could have been made by Baba-e-Urdu even.
@Umar Jawed: its not in English, try writing that in Urdu and notice how similar are these words.
Has anyone considered the possibility that the teacher may have altered the word to get the girl in trouble?
A single dot can jeopardize the entire Islamic religion?
this fatwa is for those who think, blasphemy should be punished by death, please read the whole article before commenting anything: http://askimam.org/fatwa/fatwa.php?askid=f13f1d8c42838075d2b55228ecd39eae
It's a spelling mistake. Does religion make people's heads so soft that they cannot think? A spelling mistake is just that..not an insult to your imaginary gods or anything else. Even if it was an intentional act by an adult, who gives you apes the right to end a life? Get over yourself you heathens. Nothing else in this world drives seemingly normally developed people into extremists. it makes thinking people sick to our stomachs and merely fortifies our healthy distaste for cults of any kind.
MAY GOD GIVE THEM WISDOM WHILE MAKING DECISIONS......OTHERWISE YOU CAN'T EXPECT GOOD THINGS FROM THEM...
PREDICTION BY A LEADING INDIAN ASTROLOGER- The present religious intolerance and terrorism would lead to anarchy and turmoil in Pakistan and ultimately end up in collapse of the country by 2014.
A sick move by sick fundamentalists under the sick blasphemy law! Terrible incident indeed.
@Hussain Aslam:
O.K. then. How old are you? You've made a spelling mistake yourself!
Shame on you humans who did this for little girl. Can she dare to learn further? what you expect to do 8 years Kid? Do all religious work? she even don't know why she is on earth.
Its a black face of our rigid society. Its a writting error while so called Mulla's are going to present it as a blasphemy issue. A writteng mistake might be happen from an eight graded girl but its not mean to blame her as a blasphemer. Unfortunately our social norms & values are not clearly defined & religious extremisim is at higher level in society. As a Pakistani we needs to improve our social system with all the aspects of life.
@Umar Jawed: Umar .. Laanat and Naat when written in urdu is just placing one dot wrong !!! try for ur self !! if u cud spell either u wud have known too !!!
poor girl ... the mullahs need to be chained ! they r too out of control ...

BTW - anyone surprised at this ?? In any case why are religious poems in the 8th grade curriculum at all ?
@Annonymous:
"Everyday I feel more and more ashamed to be a Pakistan! The peabrains of the so-called educators of our youth could be so narrow minded it’s unconceivable! I am utterly disgusted!"
Why blame the teachers? Don't you know that death penalty is the law in Pakistan for blasphemy? If the teacher had not reported this she would have been given the death penalty instead for hiding, condoning and supporting blasphemy.
So the real problem is with the Pakistani nation and society that tolerates and prescribes such medieval laws and punishments.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister unfamiliar with the spelling of ‘God’
Bit of a controversial one this, but it seems that Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari wrote this in the visitors’ book at Maza-e-Quaid, the National Mausoleum that is tomb to Jinnah, the country’s founder:
May Gaad give us the strut to save Pakistan.
Urdu of Laanat – لعنت Urdu of Naat – نعت
Tony Blair fails to spell the word ‘tomorrow’. Twice. In one short letter.
Schools Minister Jim Knight, the words he spelled incorrectly on his blog maintainence (maintenance) convicned (convinced) curently (currently) similiar (similar) foce (force) pernsioners (pensioners) reccess (recess) archeaological (archeological) acheiving (achieving) receieved (received)
In 1992, American Vice President Dan was visiting a school when pupil William Figueroa wrote the word ‘potato’ on the blackboard. The VP was appalled, and quickly ‘corrected’ it to ‘potatoe’.
No point in commenting on a website, if the bad can come out on the streets the good should too.
We request the authorities to give special protection to the victim family. I As a Christian pakistani appreciate the support to the victim family from our muslim brothers and sisters.
IT is so sad, thinking alot about this little Girl and hér mother, i Will request the government to give special protection to the family because danger is still there from extremists. I Will request the parents not to send their daughter back to the same Schools.
The Urdu teacher should be fired right away for making a mountain out of a molehill.
According to information found via Google a "naat" is a poem praising you know who, and "laanat" means "damn." The visual difference in Urdu is only a small dot. This would be like forgetting to dot an "i" or cross a "t" in English or putting the mark in the wrong place. What an overblown fuss over nothing more than bad penmanship.
Seriously? What the hell is wrong with people?
i dont see my posts here?? does the tribune uplaod posts which only serve the purpose??
And than we wonder, why Azaba-e-Allahi ......I guess Target killings, Inflation, Terrorism, Earthquakes, Floods and Dengu are not enough to learn from...
Do Muslims still wonder at the tide that is turning against Islam?
Hadith: It's better for a leader to make mistake in forgiving than to make mistake in punishing
There is a very serious fundamental question here. Why should a non-Muslim be made to write about a poem praising the Prophet in the first place? What would have been the Muslim reaction if an American Muslim had been made to write in praise of Jesus Christ?
Isn't this hypocritical of Muslim countries?
Below is the Urdu of both the words, they look very similar to me.....Correct me if I am wrong.
Urdu of Laanat - لعنت Urdu of Naat - نعت
Why is this even news? This is an Islamic country. Living there and not becoming a Muslim itself is blasphemous - how can one expect common Muslims to tolerate something like this happily?
Blasphemy is truly a victimless crime.
A Christian doctor friend of mine faced the same treatment and couldnt work on a reputable hospital or get any support from the medical association though he was highly qualified than others. Heartbroken he has wowed never to return to Pakistan and is just waiting to get his immigration done.
I wish people can get out of this "stone age " stigma...its about time.
This blasphemy Law has been continuously misused. The Supreme Court Should take notice of it,Lawyers can give a petition to review this law, as we have no hope of any politician touching it, as it is a "Sensitive Issue".This is insanity in the name of Islam.
@ Malik
I'm not sure whether you're being serious or joking......but we are not in old Arabian societal times. What religious rulings are you basing this on?! Pakistan law or some twisted tribal cleric's whim?! There is no compulsion for her to be 'forced to convert' or for her to 'marry a Muslim man'. This is wishful extremist and ignorant thinking and persecution. An apology should have sufficed rather than this pathetic debacle of societal mob bigotry and extremism.
@Syed Fraz Ali: Because such news as you ask for are hard to come by, sir.
And even if such occurrences are the exception (which they are not), you know the saying "exceptions disprove the rule", in this case it conclusively proves that Pakistan is increasingly becoming an insanely intolerant society because its people are condoning such activities, all in the name of religion of Islam (of which Pakistanis are considered 2nd or 3rd class citizens by the original Muslims in Arabia, read about treatment of Pakistani workers by Arabs in UAE, Oman, KSA, Kuwait etc.)
Indian government should offer to take in all the Christians (2.8 million), Parsis (3000), Sikhs (50000) and Hindus (2.9 million) from Pakistan. Any Muslim who wants to go live in Pakistan should be allowed to go from India. ~6 million people can be easily accommodated in exchange for an equal number of Muslims from India, many of whom have beliefs that Pakistan is a better place to be for Muslims than India. The same can be arranged for Afghan non-Muslim minorities.
I am sure the remaining Afghans & Pakistani (100% Muslim) will continue to fight among themselves along ethnic and sectarian (Sunni, Shi'a, Ahmediyya) lines. But India as a target for refugees can then turn a blind eye to this problems of blasphemy in Af-Pak.
Feel sorry for little child and her parents...and even more for those sick ppl who took such a henious decesion....welcome to stone age
@sick of this nonsense: "google it up" eh? I dont know if you are aware, but google cant really be treated as a "source." What you get in google is a bunch of search results. Your country and constitution discriminates against minorities and India's doesnt. Does that tell you anything about the levels of intolerance in our respective countries? We have dozens of political leaders, business people, top professionals, celebrities, sportspeople from the minorities back in India. While you had 1 yousuf yohana who eventually became a mohammad yousuf in a span of 6-7 years. BTW, what connotations does the last name "masih" have in pakistani society?
Why do we just right about the loopholes in the society? Why don't we suggest solutions to them? A comment says: Pakistan never stops to surprise me. Well, stop being surprised and find a solution too such problems!
And the conclusion / solution is that "Both the mother & the innocent daughter should accept Islam & become muslim for thier success in the world & eternity (May Almighty Allah help / guide them & also to all the humen beings)".
@Ahsan: Spot on! I have been trying to write the words myself and it is just the placement of the dot-that is all! I say stone the teacher. She/he had the option to read it in whatever way he/she choose to. By reading it the wrong way its the teacher who has committed blasphemy. Oh my God! It has now come to this. Shame on all of us.
@Nasir: I would be more than happy to hear good news from your country my friend. But unfortunately whatever good news that ever manages to come out, it gets ridiculously outweighed by the unpleasant news. And the fact that this happens in our immediate neighborhood (India), it sort of concerns us a little more than maybe the others on here,
Umar Jawed you mustn't forget that children make mistakes. Assuming that this was deliberate, would you burn an 8th grader at the stake? Instead of teaching her the difference between right and wrong, you'd just out-right bludgeon her? This is hardly the course of action to take. A person not belonging to the Islamic faith should not be living in fear, checking and rechecking their actions to ensure that they don't make an error which would shake the very fibres of their existence and shun them out of society. I for one am actually thankful that they got out with their lives.
Now I'm not going to sit here and talk about how dreadful this country has become, because it is what it is. Hopefully things will start getting better from here onwards. The main problem is that if anyone even speaks up against this lunacy, the religious elements rise up and strike down the person(s) claiming them to be enemies of Islam. Unless we fight back and form a group that doesn't start and end with a long march, we'll remain in this abyss of ignorance and continue hearing about these "witch hunts".
@hammad: it is disgusting to still hear such instigative comments from some of our brothers in islam which could tarnish the beauty and peace of islam. It is our duety as muslims to behave in a manner that would erase bad perceptions regarding islam and it's doctrines when such matters come up.We should not forget that our behaviour and reaction or tollerance to matters like this is very paramount in the protection and recognition of our beloved relion;Islam.May Allah grant us understanding and protect our religion. it is disgusting to still hear such instigative comments from some of our brothers in islam which could tarnish the beauty and peace of islam.
What galls me most is that there is not much questioning of the blasphemy law itself. Rather there are comments here trying to rationalize the the decision. Even worse is the apologists claiming that the girl was old enough to know she was making a mistake. Their comments are akin to blaming the victim of rape saying that "she should have been more modest in her dressing and behavior"
You do realise .. Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful. Those that desire & gain power rarely believe in any god That is why the god they claim to act on behalf of ..is no more than their own reflection they see every morning when they look in the mirror.. & all the fools flock around them & encourage that vanity daily.
Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities Voltaire.
Morality is doing right, no matter what you are told. Religion is doing what you are told, no matter what is right.
Though I am no urdu expert but I'm sure if the teacher actually read the whole sentence, it probably wouldn't have even made sense.
Can't imagine what she and her parents must be feeling right now .
I am no religious guy, but service to people and humanity is the first priority in Islam without any sort of discrimination. Wasn't that what we were taught in elementary classes? What happened to that? I'm sure that mistake would've been completely overlooked if a Muslim child had written it.
MAY ALLAH HELP THIS COUNTRY.
@Umar Jawed: While you and I were lucky to have studied at decent schools, you'll be surprised to see the current education standard in government school. Look up a video "The education of Pakistan" on youtube. Just a glimpse of how deep waters our educational institutes are in.
I still don't understand why is it that everything is seen in religious prism in Pakistan? It's a school for gods sake. There will be kids from other religions too. Why would you ask them to write a poem praising Allah? Let them understand the world first before you throw at them your ideology. You are basically putting minorities in a highly risk/religious society judging every small mistake of theirs, calling everything blasphemous. Pakistanis ought to be ashamed of their society.
A xenophobe doesn't need much of an excuse to punish someone different --- a country which was born because it did not want to be a minority apparently has trouble tolerating minorities.
Even if it was deliberate the reaction of the teacher, the administration and the religious people involved was completely contrary to common sense and the spirit of tolerance and forgiveness. The misdeed, if it actually was such, should have been explained to the child, gaining her confidence and thereby doing religion a service in the process. What now has happened is exactly the opposite and we wonder why the world views us as religiously intolerant.
So has anyone pointed out that this article contains a spelling mistake, albeit minuscule, right in the bold text at the top?
"The word in question was ‘laanat’ instead of ‘naat’ – an easy error for a child to make, as the written versions of the words are similar."
Not condoning the Blasphemy Law or anything but I find the statement above to be most peculiar because,in Urdu script, the two words are significantly different and easily distinguishable.
@indian christian: religious intolerance is more rampant in india then in Pakistan. google it up. Here in Pakistan you see many of us supporting the minority. Its not the matter of pakistan and india. its the matter of intolerance which is rampant in both countries. @pieter van: lanaat means curse upon.. naats are sung in praise of Prophet (PBUH).
even though i doubt the girl made a mistake she is a child. we should all take a deep breathe and relax. Nothing will happen to Islam if some one bad mouths it. People have been badmouthing it since ages, it is still the fastest growing religion in the world. However if things like these are ever shown light to people who want to convert they will surely change their minds because this isnt our religion its barbarism. this law is getting out of hand. what will expelling her accomplish???????
Reminds me of Urdu teacher who gave me a thrashing if I made a mistake. This women did not know anything about Urdu except getting sadistic pleasure from humiliating her students. Urdu is a beautiful language but for long long time I could bring myself to read Urdu poetry, I hated Urdu so much because of my experience with that teacher.
@preeti
Reporter of this incident has his NGO by the name of HDO ( Human Development Organization ), and he is open to accept any kind of donations in this regard.
Could it be tabloid journalism seeking to overhype the event as a way to attack Islam?
After all this, we still call us Pakistani.... its hard to live really, i m full of tears
This is height of religious intolerance in Pakistan and I am now in full agreement with some Pakistani's comments that wrath of Almighty or Allah has fallen upon this country with much worse to come in the near future.
Shame on the society that we have become, we are a curse to ourselves indeed.
Wonder what aka leader of the youth Mr. Zaid Hamid who not long ago was threatening the US and India thinks about this......well I don't think that he ever thinks any ways
A very basic question is: Why a Christian girl was being taught Naat?
@Ahsan: Its not one dot. Lanat and naat are way apart. Seems like your urdu is even more pathetic than hers. Its not a mistake an 8th grader could make.
Shows how well educated our Mullahs are and the teachers.
The only fear the world has is the uneducated lot which 3rd world is producing so prolifically..
@Sidra Riaz: A few incidences make you go against Islam. How cool is that? You only need to know what Islam is and whether the person claiming to be the savior of religion and practicing it so is even following the religion or not. IF they are not good Muslims, it doesnt make the religion bad, it only shows how pathetic your knowledge about religion is and how pathetic you are to not do anything about that. The problem is not with Islamic Republic, The problem is that there is no Islam over there and you exhibit that out loud!
@indian christian: I am happy that India and pakistan got separated in 1947 too because female infanticide is still practiced in India which is obviously much worse off than expelling someone from the city. You must be lucky to have a mother Id say. Not too think about the hindu muslim, hindu sikh and hindu christian riots that take place over there. Im sure being a christian you ou did not lose a relative to a hindu mob and so you are happy. every one is not lucky like you perhaps.
no wonder why France will never go back on being a laic country shame on these non democratic people
@Anthony Permal: I appreciate your sense of humor and sarcasm but when such allegations are made, they are not subjective at all. Im not commenting on how the scene was acted out, but themistake is not possible for an 8th grader to make.
At least, she did not get a verdict of being stoned to death that the blasphemy law calls for. Maybe because she was a minor.
@Umar Jawed: U seem to have missed the whole point completely. Here we're talking abt tolerance towards humanity, ESP where the poor girl has apologised for her UNintentional mistake. And here u go saying smtg quite silly.
Hahaha! I love Pakistan!
@Muhammad Waqas Luqman: Get a life. She is singled out because she was a Christian. As you said, the village already has a prejudicial atmosphere.
How can you ask me to be loyal, passionate and be a patriot after seeing thousands of these cases?
I wanted a separate country where I would feel secure but I also didn't ask for a country inhabited by the worst of humanity that doesn't recognizes the innocence of a child and takes away her education.
Our religion teaches us the lesson of forgiving.Whatever she did but we should not forget the fact that she is immature and innocent girl and she did so by just a spelling mistake. If she did so deliberately we should forgive her,it will inspire her from our religion ... thanks May ALLAH forgive her and forgive us..... Adeel Ahmed.
Its sad how a very negative image of Islam and Muslims is being portrayed by these ignorant, hypocritic "maulanas". What if a daughter of one of these "mulla" had done this mistake? Loving the Prophet(SAW) truly means to follow His Sunnah! and what did our beoved Prophet(SAW) did in these situation. They killed His family, His family. Yet, when He was in power He forgave them all. Yes, He did! What our nation need today is education!
Everyday I feel more and more ashamed to be a Pakistan! The peabrains of the so-called educators of our youth could be so narrow minded it's unconceivable! I am utterly disgusted!
@Zalmay: you are absolutely right but we can just pray for her and can only comment to this post
I feel pity for pupil having intolerant & disgraceful teachers like the one who instead of correcting the girl on the spot created a mess. God bless this country & our new generation.
How can we help her? I would pay for her schooling if the Express Tribune can help her get out of that place.
First of all, for those rush-to-judge kinds of people who say they believe in Allah, that Allah is all powerful, merciful, etc...if you really TRULY believed that(which by your insane and ignorant actions you prove that you DONT)than you would know this essential and powerful fact:
GOD DOES NOT NEED US. WE need God.Therefore: GOD doesnt require our so-called "outrage" at percieved "blasphemies", nor does God need assistance from us puny human creatures in ANY WAY. STOP the hypocrisy, you fanatical idiots: the truth is, it is these judgmental irrational sorts who find joy in sadism, torturing innocents and establishing power through TERROR.
So come on you twisted fake "men of God": own up to the truth, quit hiding behind religion!
@Muhammad Waqas Luqman: I agree with you sir. The media is misleading everyone saying she is a 6th-grader instead of saying she is 14 years of age
14 is not a kid, but, a good enough age for getting married in our earlier Arab societies. So, she should be treated as an adult. The punishment for her should be that she should apologise for the blasphemous act and convert to Islam immediately. Or she should be made to marry a Muslim man.
Why is Islam part of the curriculum in the first place?
By the way, its too big of a mistake to be made by an 8th grader. It was 15 years ago when i was in grade 8th and naa't is included in the urdu syllabus for class 3 onwards, i guess. A simple check of the rest of her paper would tell if she is that foreigner to the language.
The establishment is taking measurs to take the state to stone age to preempt RAW-CIA-MOSAD-MIA-12345 plot to reduce it to stone age.
This is just outrageous. Have no words .... sorry.
@sarah: well mam its really sad .but worst part is that instead of putting dis law in some more parctcable n sensible way we allways find an easy way to escape by poniting our fingers towards west.i think its high time that we point our finger to our selves n our mullahs who hav been supproting these kind of activties where lot f innocent people hav been killed.these mullahs hav hijcaked our religion.n no one can dare to say any thing.n if any one dares .............see fate of slaman taseer.GOD HELP US
Well, there is so much happening in real then the media is showing us. I have spent 5 year just 15 miles away from the Place where this incident took place. It is called "Kotha Kabar village "which means the “the Donkey's Grave Village". In that Place Christan Missionaries have started to built a church and a Christian Colony and the have converted many of the, literally, "POOR" Muslims to Christians. The Girl Belongs to one of the family in that place...
It must also be taken into the account that The High Court has stopped the Construction, dated August 26, 2011. So, the government already has an eye on them.
And I also see that the media laying stress on the word "8th-Grader" and keep saying that she was a child. So 8-grader, if v judge it, v can certainly conclude, that she was 13 or 14 years old... In that age a person can B childish but not a child... They are sensible enough.
Besides if we look at the Fact, the words, “LAANAT” and ‘NAAT” the way they written, there is no chance of confusing one with the other. As both are different.. In ENGLISH it may seem the same but in URDU, they are totally different. And also if someone says they she might have written it the wrong way because she was in rush then its not possible. Coz "LAANAT" which means "CURSE" is longer than the Word "NAAT" which means "Praise to Holy Prophet".. So in rush u definitely cannot write long words and especially words which are completely opposite to each other.
So definitely it was a slandering malicious act.
However I do agree with Hammad here that they should have done a proper counseling of her after this incident rather than expelling her. It, sure, will give birth to Anger and Hatred in the hearts of other Minority Groups, which certainly is not good for our country, especially, when it, already, has to deal more critical situations.
This is just the Land of the Pure going through another round of purification.
Speaking os spelling mistakes, it's "minuscule".
The decision to transfer the mother to another place was a sensible one bc her life was in danger in the same city... besides Wah cantt is a nice place:)
Dont support the girl.... she will either get killed or be thrown in jail. For her safety refrain from commenting.. Pakistan is land of insanity... anything can happen.
why does an Urdu exam have questions on religious content anyway? and if it does have religious content, obviously it must be restricted to Islamic content only, heaven forbid that our poor little muslim students be taught anything about plurality and living in an inclusive society! This is so shameful.. Our country becomes more intolerant every day and anyone with any secular beliefs is severely outnumbered.. So depressing!
I think the teacher and the mob should be charged with blasphemy of Islam.
@indian christian: Brother/Sister..India and Pakistan are similar in this form of the game..So there is truly nothing to be happy about..Indians face so much inhumane and uncalled for incidents on a daily basis as well..Its how we have become as a subcontinent..disgraceful
such molvis should be strictly punished for damaging the image of Islam..
I do not believe this ... I think and hope this is some staged news to degrade Pakistani society ...
Looks like the media propaganda against Muslims once again
Evil just needs good people to stay silent to spread. And no commenting on articles does not count..
This issue needs to be taken up to the international level- In front of PM of Pakistan and everyone else in the world so that the Gov't of Pak can be embarrassed (apparently we need to be embarrassed on an international level before our Gov't can take any action against it). An effing dot and you beat up a CHILD?! What is WRONG!? Those clerics & the whole school should be punished for torturing this poor child! Where is Hina Khar preaching to other countries about muslim rights?! Forget about Kashmir worry about your own people's safety first!
@Syed Fraz Ali: You dont want news, you want propaganda. Just read the Nation, you'll be quite content.
Yes many people can't spell words. Many poor people can't spell words correctly. Many poor children whose parents are ignorant can't spell words and don't know how to correct a child who mis spells. Will no one take on the clerics and confront them ?? Will no one condemn such abuse ? Should not the teacher of the school be reprimanded and dismissed for beating up a little girl ?? Is the teachers job to teach or to stand on judgement ?? What is she there for if she could not let a child understand the error and help her understand what was expected of her ?? This leaves me speechless and I am horrified.
The qadri lovers have stooped to a new low
@MUNIB: u idiot is not about taliban ....what u do taliban .. mounphat ...

Please do not victimise an ignorant little girl. Realize, she has done and confessed a mistake. Do not become so rigid. Learn to be tolerant. Keep in mind that the Almight Allah is merciful and know your design. If you will not be tolerant, our prophet MUHAMMAD (Allah peace be upon him) will not forgive you and you people may be deprived off "Shafat" in next world.
did any body ever make a mistake while writing hollow caste system as holocaust.
this is beyond ridiculous its sick!thats why blasphemy laws MUST be repealed and abolished altogether
PLEASE remove the reference to the names of the girl and her family in the article. The least we can do to let them live a new life in a new place...
@Pieter van Lieshout
Naat means a poem written in remembrance and praise of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
Laanaat means to curse someone
that teacher's and others mentality towards a little girl shows how much they hate other religions.
While I agree with most of you condemning the act, we should not forget the killings and all after such incidence occurred in past. The administration probably took the decision (which has left a bad taste though) in anticipation of the riots and further problems as a result of reaction to this incident by the fanatics. The dust settled before it could become a wave of killings and destruction not only for the family but the whole christian community in the area.
Having said that,,,I, too, am ashamed of what had happened.
Sheer exaggeration! They are ignoramuses, but you aren't! Why do you people hunt for stories that literally slanders the image of Pakistan. Why don't you people cover stories like students of this very country coming with out-of-this-world ideas?! Why don't you cover the stories of honest people toiling and moiling day and night just to keep this country thriving! Why don't you post interviews with top-class Debaters and Orators who maintain to keep Pakistan's dignity and head held high even under the harshest of circumstances?
Only because shes a christian, we being muslims misspell a number of times but cover it up by saying "nauzubillah" in this case we should also be sentenced to some kind of punishment.
@Nasir:
And that's ALL you could see on this article? Not a word about the ridiculousness of the situation and what the girl is going through, but your own nationalist view point?
well you wanted a Muslim homeland now you got it!
this situation shows we r still not ready for change
Whenever there is a negative news about Pakistan, I see lots of non-Pakistani comments like bees on honey, but when there is a positive news instead, they vanish like stars in the sun.
utter psychotics! I vividly remember that when i gave the final exams of 8th GRADE, in the urdu exam i spelled "Janab" as "Jinnat" by mistake. Just a shift of dot changed the whole word. why dont we realized that shez a human that also a KID and can commit such mistake.
It is truly disgusting how these "religious" leaders persecuted a mere child for something as commonplace as a spelling error. Anyone could've made such a mistake. What the child did is not at all blasphemous by any stretch of the imagination. The true blasphemy lies in the actions of the teacher, the "religious" leaders and the administration. By putting this child and her family through all this, they have proved that they are the real blasphemers, because Islam does not teach us this injustice, and nor did the Prophet (PBUH) ever take such an action, and so by proclaiming themselves the guardians of faith and pretending to be following Islam there are actually flinging filth on the name of Islam, and on themselves.
Wow ! Now the americans can never threaten pakistan to bomb it to stone ages. It is already in stone ages now.
Eight-grader can't spell naat.?Either it was deliberate or her Urdu is quite weak.
Lord, what fools these mortals be! Easily victimizing the youth to glorify their so called religious hogwash.
Can't find right words for expression. Why everybody is acting like sole torch bearer of the religion? One thing is surely extinct from our society....Tolerance ! Wait for the Big Bang I guess !!!
The blasphemy law, the general impression and ambit of the law has been muddled by the clergy. In its present form the blasphemy law is un-Islamic. Imam Abu Hanifa's teachings do not agree with the law. How can a eight year old Christian girl sully or tarnish the high spiritual station of our Holy Prophet (saw), who is the pinnacle of all Allah's creations?
I am tearful....this poor little girl never knew that one mere mistake will cast out a big mob against her. May God bless her and keep her safe Amen
Not even one person in favour of the judgement. This goes to show that people like us who can read such articles via internet on the comfort of our couches and workstations are the real face of Pakistan and promote tolerance, equality, justice and peace. But lets just be awake to the fact that these posts are not taking us anywhere and these things will keep happening unless you and I do something about it and REPLACE these ignorant self praised and self monitored mullahs and leaders.
Its like everyday you feel that dinner has extra salt in it..but neither do you tell the cook to take care of it, nor do you make an attempt to cook it yourself..
Even my post is useless..see..?
Iodine ki kami?
Dear Sir, this is a very sad affair. My sympathies go out to this girl and her family. Hopefully this will teach religious extremists that education for girls should be encouraged, instead of campaigning to close down girls schools! By the way your article does not explain the meaning of the words ‘laanat’ and ‘naat’. For my understanding I would appreciate if you could provide the translation.
The teacher was devoid of love and attachment to her student otherwise she would have ignore the petty mistake. We all know people who don't "want" a reward for their prayers but they pray for Divine wrath for those who don't pray and fast.
DISGUSTING! this is not what our religion is about. These people are a disgrace to our nation and religion! Whats worse is that nothing is going to happen about this. No justice, will ever come-forth and perhaps justice will not put an end to such mind-set but something needs to be done!
Shocked to read this would be an understatement. Unbelievable.
@Vigilant: It is not about tolerance. This needs common sense. Motive should also be the judge rather than mere focus on action. A child committing a mistake in writing is not blasphemous, it is NORMAL. You tolerate mistakes not NORMAL things.
its not even a spelling mistake!!!! in fact, its a misplaced DOT!!!! write both words in urdu ... ONE DOT!!!!
Pathetic. Typical behaviour you can expect from this society
Interestingly enough, no fingers point to the teacher who has obviously failed at actually "teaching" the child well enough so as not to have made the mistake in the first place. Praying for the safety of the child and her family from the depraved society/colony she lives in.
What is religion doing in an Urdu exam?
Simply SICK, SICK and SICK mentality.
Shame on such society where humanity is at RISK.
I am happy to see the reactions from the public which do not support such mindless action against an innocent girl. God bless!
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) forgave the old woman in Mecca who threw garbage at him, and prayed for mercy for the people of Ta'if who threw stones at him. In his name, we now persecute children who make spelling mistakes. God help us.
Though I have no right to speak on this matter. However could not refrain myself No it not a judgment on anyone from me. Just an observation.
For God sake this is a child who has made a mistake in an exam.
Allah is merciful than why is his man so merciless?
Mistakes are part of learning.
Sincerely
And this is tolerant Pakistan....
This is simply Pathetic. That is why we want a secular Pakistan. No to mullah ism.. No to Islamic Republic.
Ah...the thaikedaar's of Islam. Protecting God and the Prophet from the vast, endless and evil powers of a 12 year old child...
Are you KIDDING me?
Pathetic. Can't even think of anything to say...height of ignorance!
this is one of many result when you are trying to inject extreme religionism, in order to ensure religion, there is no place for commonsense, humanity, and all are brainwashed machines doing things according to preprogram. no doubt, this girl will be punished brutally, raped and may be killed, no one can help her, because "she is against islam".
Crazy! Shows our messed up minds.
What the hell is happening in Pakistan. We are follower of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), just for a second think what prophet (pbuh) would have done....I am sure he would feel ashamed of the todays Moulvis who make stupid decisions and make issue out of everything.
Ah an ugly news to start off your day with. The only crime of the innocent soul was that she was a Christian. If it were a Muslim student, nobody would have given it much heed. O self proclaimed Ashiq-e-Rasuls, don't you people have any fear whatsoever of Allah Almighty? Even a bit of kindness and tolerance in any corner of your hearts?
This is beyond ridiculous! If a Muslim student had made the same honest mistake will we see the same furor? The teacher, the principal, and the so called ulemas who had the girl expelled ought to be ashamed of themselves! I hope Mr. Suo moto is reading this.
Psychopaths.
Due to shortage of time students do mistake in a hurry in exams.. she's just a 8th grader, they should have done a proper counseling of her after the incident rather expelling her from the school...!!
where is the tolerance in our society???
Sick blasphemy law. No wonder Pakistan still leaves in stone age.
due to shortage of time, students do mistakes in a hurry, she's just a 8th grader. They should have done a proper counseling of her after this incident rather than expelling him.
All such things can only happen in the land of the Pure. People are asking how can the land become Pure if contaminants like Christians, Hindus and Sikhs remain - so they are all charged and acting as filters. That children have also been roped into this game makes one shudder about the future. A very tolerant society in both word and deed, indeed !
poor girl! what trauma she and her family would be going under. I feel for this small girl. May Allah keep her in protection from the evil designs of those who call themselves the followers of Allah, the most merciful and the holy prophet peace be upon him who was send to the world as Rehmat. I don't know why a teacher would make an issue of an error of a small child. what does she know about blasphemy. so much for the religious tolerance and pluralism that a Christian girl HAS to study Islamic teachings.
the hypocrites have no shame when they blame the West for intolerance towards Muslims' faith and life style.
These Mullas would eat up Pakistan. save Islam and Pakistan from their ignorance and violence.
In conventional faith systems, it's God who protects man. For these radicals, it's the other way around. There ought to be a special punishment for the lunacy of assuming your God to be so insecure as to require you to protect His honour from an eight-grader.
How many Muslim students can spell the word in Urdu without the same mistake.
Did her fellow classmates also make a similar mistake, not all but may be a few.
This is a prejudicial accusation on the girl because she is a Christian.
Have no idea what the word means, but what the heck. My child also makes a spelling mistake and me too.!
The incidence is blasphemy against blasphemy.
By the way, did PAK forget about Asia Bibi, your slain Minister Bhatti and Tasser?
wow
Jinnah would be cursing himself for creating this country which is practically under Taliban rule now
wow...Pakistan never stops to surprise me.... :)
next would be a goat I guess
Sigh. An eigth-grader should know better. How dare she make such a deep theological mistake.
The girl must have been a Jewish Spy under the payroll of the CIA but trained by RAW and given youthful makeup by Mossad.
