Veteran actor Shujaat Hashmi passes away in Lahore

President Zardari expresses grief over his passing, lauds his entertainment role

President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday expressed deep grief and sorrow over the passing of renowned actor and voice artist Shujaat Hashmi, paying tribute to his remarkable contributions to Pakistan's cultural and entertainment landscape.

The president described Hashmi as one of the prominent artists of the golden era of Radio Pakistan and Pakistan Television, acknowledging his enduring legacy in radio, television, theatre and film, a condolence message issued from the Presidency said.

President Zardari particularly highlighted Hashmi's memorable performance in the iconic drama serial Waris, saying his timeless acting in the classic production would always be remembered by audiences.

He noted that the late artist played an important role in promoting Pakistan's national cultural heritage through his work across multiple artistic platforms, leaving a lasting impact on the country's entertainment industry.

"The artistic services of Shujaat Hashmi will always remain alive in history," the president said, adding that the nation had lost a talented and dedicated performer.

President Zardari also prayed for the elevation of the departed soul's ranks and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, wishing them strength and patience in this difficult time.

Shujaat Hashmi won the hearts of viewers with decades of stellar performances. He was a prominent figure in Pakistan Television's golden era, gaining widespread fame for his role as Moladad in the classic drama series Waris.

Hashmi began his acting career in the 1970s with PTV dramas, starting with Kohar. His first Punjabi film, Chhad Baray Di Yaari, was released in 1975, and he later starred in the 1979 film Khaak Aur Khoon in a leading role.

For his remarkable contributions to the performing arts, Shujaat Hashmi was awarded the Pride of Performance in 1994. His work continues to be celebrated by fans and colleagues across the country.

Hashmi gained widespread recognition in the 1980s through the popular Pakistan Television drama Hawayein, which brought him national fame. Over the course of his career, he also appeared in several Urdu-language films, earning praise for his versatile performances.

In recognition of his artistic contributions, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the Pride of Performance in 1994.

Members of the entertainment industry expressed grief over the actor's passing and paid tribute to his contributions to television and cinema. Meanwhile, Maryam Nawaz, Chief Minister of Punjab, also expressed sorrow over Hashmi's death. In a statement, she extended condolences to the bereaved family and praised the late actor's professional legacy.
