Shia LaBeouf has been granted permission to travel to Rome despite facing a criminal case tied to an alleged assault during Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The decision came just days after a judge initially denied the actor’s request to leave the country.
LaBeouf, 39, had asked the court for approval to travel to Italy between March 1 and March 8 in order to attend his father’s baptism in Rome. The trip, described in court filings as religious in nature, was originally rejected by a New Orleans judge after his legal team failed to include a detailed travel itinerary in the request.
However, the situation quickly changed when LaBeouf’s attorney returned to court with updated paperwork. Magistrate Judge Peter Hamilton approved the travel request once a full itinerary and accommodation details were provided. The sudden reversal allowed the actor to make the trip while remaining out on bond as his case continues in Louisiana.
The legal drama stems from an incident on February 17 during Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans. Police say the confrontation happened around 12.45 am outside the R Bar in the city’s Marigny neighbourhood. According to officers, LaBeouf allegedly punched two men and head butted a third after becoming aggressive inside the bar.
Authorities say the actor was asked to leave the venue before the altercation escalated. Court documents also claim he shouted homophobic slurs during the incident, allegations that have intensified scrutiny around the case. One of the alleged victims identifies as queer while another performs in drag.
LaBeouf was initially released shortly after his arrest but later had to post bonds totalling 105000 dollars after the additional allegations became part of the court record. The judge also ordered him to enrol in substance abuse treatment as part of the conditions attached to the case.
The actor later discussed the incident in an interview, referencing his Catholic faith and claiming he felt threatened during the encounter. His comments have drawn criticism online and added to the controversy surrounding the case.
The legal battle now continues as prosecutors review the evidence and consider potential charges. Meanwhile, LaBeouf’s sudden approval to travel abroad has sparked debate about whether celebrity defendants receive different treatment within the justice system.
