Kathryn Hahn confirms she will play Mother Gothel in Disney’s live-action Tangled adaptation

Kathryn Hahn has confirmed she will portray the villain Mother Gothel in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled.

The actress revealed the casting news through a playful video shared on Instagram, where she wore a T-shirt featuring images of the animated villain. Hahn joked about learning the meaning of “OOTD” (Outfit of the Day) while showing off the shirt, which included multiple images of Mother Gothel. The casting had previously been reported earlier this year when Hahn was said to be in talks for the role.

In the upcoming remake, Teagan Croft will play Rapunzel, the young princess with magical golden hair who is kept hidden in a tower by Gothel. Milo Manheim has been cast as Flynn Rider, the charming rogue who helps Rapunzel escape and discover the outside world.

The new adaptation will be directed by Michael Gracey, known for directing The Greatest Showman. The screenplay is being written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, whose previous credits include Do Revenge and Someone Great. The project will be produced by Kristin Burr for Burr! Productions.

Disney’s original animated Tangled was released in 2010 and directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard. The film featured the voices of Mandy Moore as Rapunzel and Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider.

Inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Rapunzel, the animated movie was a major success for The Walt Disney Company, earning more than $590 million worldwide and receiving an Academy Award nomination for the song “I See the Light.”
