Paul Bettany reacts to Voldemort casting rumours for HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series
Rumours about who will play Lord Voldemort in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series have been circulating for months, and one name that recently entered the conversation is Paul Bettany. The actor has now addressed the speculation directly, though his response may disappoint fans hoping the casting is already confirmed.
During a recent interview, Bettany said he had not been contacted about the role despite the online chatter linking him to the iconic villain. “I haven’t heard anything about that,” he said when asked about the rumour, adding that no one from the production had reached out to him about playing Voldemort.
The actor did make it clear that the idea itself does not bother him. Bettany described himself as a fan of the Harry Potter universe and expressed admiration for the network behind the new series. While he confirmed there had been no official discussions, he acknowledged that he appreciates the franchise and would welcome being part of such a large production.
The character of Voldemort was famously portrayed in the film series by Ralph Fiennes, whose chilling performance helped define the dark wizard for a generation of viewers. Any new actor stepping into the role would inevitably face comparisons with the original portrayal, which remains one of the most recognisable villains in modern fantasy cinema.
The upcoming television adaptation of Harry Potter is expected to span seven seasons, with each season adapting one of the books from J. K. Rowling’s bestselling series. Production is already underway in the United Kingdom as the network prepares what it hopes will become one of its most ambitious fantasy projects.
The series will introduce a new generation of actors to the wizarding world. Relative newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout are stepping into the central roles of Harry, Hermione and Ron. These characters were previously played by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the blockbuster film franchise.
Other major roles have already been confirmed. John Lithgow will portray Professor Dumbledore, while Paapa Essiedu has been cast as Professor Snape. Janet McTeer is set to play Professor McGonagall and Nick Frost will appear as Hagrid.
Although Voldemort remains one of the biggest roles still surrounded by speculation, the character does not appear prominently until later in the original story arc. That means casting announcements for the part may still be some time away.
The new Harry Potter adaptation is currently targeting a 2027 launch on HBO Max. With filming already underway and casting news continuing to emerge, the series is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched television projects in development. For now, Bettany’s name remains only part of the rumour mill rather than an official addition to the wizarding world.
