Trans Activist Alexandra Billings recalls Eric Dane’s support on 'Grey’s Anatomy' set
Alexandra Billings says Eric Dane showed “what a true ally looks like” on set

Actress and trans activist Alexandra Billings has shared an emotional account of working with Eric Dane on Grey’s Anatomy, describing a moment she said demonstrated his support for her and the trans community.
In an Instagram video posted on February 20, a day after Dane died at 53 from complications related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Billings reflected on her experience during season three of the ABC drama. She portrayed Donna Gibson, a trans woman navigating a breast cancer diagnosis while transitioning.
“I got the role on Grey’s Anatomy, which was shocking to me. I hadn't done a lot of television, and I was floored. This was 2006,” Billings said. She added, “Now, 20 years ago, the landscape for transgender performers in Hollywood was the Sahara Desert; it was nonexistent.”
Billings recalled filming a scene with Dane, who played Dr Mark Sloan, in which her character discussed hormone treatment. Between takes, she said Dane asked about her own experience transitioning.
“Eric turns to me between takes and says, ‘Alex, listen, what happened between you and your doctor when you talked to him about hormones and treatment? What transpired?'"
She described explaining the challenges she faced in the 1980s, including legal risks. When the scene was filmed again, Billings said Dane adjusted his performance.
“We start the scene again, and as we are talking, Eric puts his hand on my shoulder,” she said, later adding, “And then at the end of the scene, he takes my hand —this isn't in the script — he holds my hand.”
Reflecting on the moment, Billings said, “Eric Dane showed everyone on that set what a true ally looks like.”
